Well an HX40 requires a different downpipe to attach to the exhaust. The flange on the downpipe that fits the stock turbo won't fit the HX40 because it's 3. 5". I believe this turbo has a true 4" flange on the elbow.

So to get a true 4", you've gotta get a different turbo. The 35's are 3. 5". Also, the 3. 5" section you are referring to on the downpipe is no more than 1/2" long. It doesn't create any more restriction than your stock exhaust housing and elbow.

This is why people like MBRP and Magnaflow and others can say they have a 4" system from the turbo-back.

By the way, I have an MBRP system but I wish I had gone with something different for reasons that are too lengthy to list here.

Thanks, Heavyhauler for clarifying that for me. So, would the 4 in flange/elbow from the HX40 fit in place of the 3. 5 in flange/elbow of the HX35 if you had a true 4 in downpipe?

In otherwords, is there a 4 in flange/elbow that would fit the HX35 and the HX40 so you could replace the 3. 5 in elbow on the HX35 with a 4 in flange/elbow that would bolt up to the HX35 now (with true 4 in downpipe) and later when you got an HX40 turbo it would bolt up to it also?

If it fit both, then it would save you replacing the 3. 5 in end on the 4 in downpipe to convert from the HX35 to the HX40. If it would then you would already have a true 4 inch downpipe for either the HX35 or the HX40.

If I switched from an HX35 to HX40 I would need a new 4 in downpipe or have mine modified ..... what a pain! If this could be avoided then mybe this guy Kvaughn would save himself that trouble.

Thanks,

Dave

Another vote for Rip's. Great system, easy install, and great customer service. I caught his sale for $289, and also got a 5" SS tip for $30-something.

HX-35, plus HX35 to HX40 exhaust adapter, plus an HX40 downpipe=a full 4" downpipe. All these parts can be had from Piers and work very well too. Also gives you the flexibility to switch between 35's and 40 housings. BTW the stock HX35 and downpipe are 3" not 3. 5".

I assumed you were looking for a stainless exhaust  .

The prices mentioned on some of these systems cannot be for a stainless exhaust:confused: . Have you first decided you want stainless or not  ? Or are you trying to decide? Most of the posts did not mentioned stainless so I'm puzzled because that will greatly effect the price.

It will be stainless steel. The crap they put on the roads in Colorado in the winter (salt and mag chloride) would make the extra dollars spent on stainless steel money well spent. Sounds like the RIPs or the MBRP is the way to go. What causes the drone anyway? I assume its the muffler. Is the drone problem only on trucks that leave the muffler off (straight pipe)?

Well, since you want stainless, Rips offers two: the Magnaflow system and a new SS Diamond Eye system. I looked at a few Magnaflow systems and some had a 3. 5 in not 4 inch (not true 4 inch you realize) downpipe so check it out first. Also some systems offer the SS tip free (and I believe those with the free tip had a 3. 5 in not 4 in downpipe) and some did not offer the tip but had a 4 in downpipe. I believe all had the 3 in adapter welded on to the end of the 4 in downpipe to fit the HX35 elbow.

KVaughn: I'm trying to find out for you here how you can get the true 4 in downpipe to save replacing yours if you decide later (like me) to upgrade your turbo. Something to be aware of and think about before you purchase. Right now I'm thinking of an HX40 so I guess I need a new 4 in downpipe or mine modified... . what a pain!

Piers offers an HX35 to HX40 adapter for $49 and an HX40 downpipe for $150. It is probably not SS and I don't know if MBRP will sell you a true 4 in SS downpipe. If you choose MBRP, if I was you, I would sure check with them to see if they offer a true 4 in SS downpipe and then get the HX35/40 adapter. The MBRP is a very well made setup IMHO.

I settled on the MBRP (and I,m very happy with it) because most of the threads mentioned it as a quiet system more of the time than any other of the stainless systems. The drone I've seen posted has been with a straight thru muffler, 4 inch and up tailpipe, without the cat. I don't know if drone is there mufflerless. I did notice my drone (no cat and 4 in MBRP straight thru muffler) but it was not too bad... Geeez, my wife liked it. It can be fixed with a resonator. Also, there was a post a few weeks ago by bkroups where he mentioned getting a quiter version of the MBRP muffler from MBRP.

Here is the thread link: http://www.tdr1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120224&highlight=MBRPdrone

Here is an exerpt from that thread:

Update:

I installed a "New" muffler that MBRP has developed.

I may have the quietest 12V exhaust in Texas

The drone is down to a level that I would not have really ever noticed if I had not been chasing it. My stock exhaust was simular to what I have now inside the cab, my stock exhaust minus cat & with a small walker muffler was louder in & out of the cab.

Dealing with MBRP's customer service was a very pleasant suprise.

They were very interested in helping to solve the problem & offered many suggestions to try to allieviate my drone. The LWB QC trucks seem to be the most prone to doing this because of the natural frequencies of the truck, Cummins & the length of the exhaust. My EGT's are actually lower with the new muffler design, but it is slightly cooler outside today. Anyone who is interested in a quieter version of MBRP's exhaust you'll have to request this muffler to get it & you may have to get them to ask Martin at MBRP about it since I have one of the first production models on my truck.

The drone is very illusive. Some feel it is the resonance of the metal exhaust pipe due to the low restrictive straight thru muffler. IMHO I believe you will get it with any good straight thru system but some mufflers may be worse than others. Some like it, some have it, some don't have it. I don't know if its worse with higher HP mods or not. It can be addressed and fixed. . to the extent you want to invest in it. Others will chime in here and educate you more. Do a search on "Drone" for hours of reading enjoyment. It gets down to a matter of personal opinion (what causes drone) and prejudice (what systems and mufflers reduce drone).

You might consider T305 instead of T409 considering the salty roads there. That is probably debateable by many here but something to think about. The MBRP T409 has a 5 year warrenty but the T305 is lifetime. Check it out for yourself... but I believe I'm right. Big difference in cost though. I'd probably go with T409 myself due to the cost of the T305.

Good luck on your decision.

Dave
