best air horn??

i really want an air horn now that my horn button on my steering wheel is broken...



question is = should i go with air horn, if so which?, i want a very low tone, no high pitch stuff!

ECOND, would a regular electric trumpet horn be just as loud?, they claim 130 db!

Last weekend during our annual Jeep Safari here in Moab, Ut, I was sitting by the street Saturday night with some friends when a semi went by and honked his horn. WOW, that was impressive. He had train horns mounted on that thing some place. I didn't see them but they sure were attention getters. Town was plugged that evening with Jeepers and spring breakers dragging main and sitting along the street so he blasted his horns a few times. I would love to have a setup like that on my truck some day!!

Grovers !!!

I have two Grovers, one is 21 1/4" and the other is 24 1/4", both with 6" bells. It comes down to amatter of personal preference but I couldn't be happier with what I have. Ricksons Wheels is a great source for the horns, give them a call @ 1-800-587-7663 and ask them to send out their horn horn cataloge. They have alot to choose from.



I can't respond to the question on the electric horns as I have never heard them, but IMHO, you will probably be more satisfied with actual air horns over the electric ones, especially if you are looking for a deep tone. If money is real tight, purchase one of the horns with the larger bells now, you could always add another at a later time.



You don't have to spend a bundle either. You can pick up a nice set of black powder coated horns for around $50. 00 and couple of $$$ for the solenoid valve. You also don't NEED the compressor, a aux. tank aired to 125 psi's will last awhile, depending on it's size. Most everything you need, sans the horns and the solenoid valve, can be purchased at a hardware store for a minimum of $$$.



I'm not using a compressor yet, my source is two aux. tanks piggybacked together and concealed in the toolbox. Works great.

how i started......

i went with the hadley bullies... good set up... ... pitch is high but flippin loud... .



i now have the hard to obtain Grover Emergency(stuttertone)... i like this one MUCH more... i sound like a fire truck now.

TNTWAY is right, they are very cool sounding horns! They will definately get your attention. I say keep your ears open! You will know when you hear the horn that is right for you I think next time I am in Long Beach, I will snag the horns off the Queen Mary:--)

I am also "shopping" and dont want to lay out $300 bucks. The Hadleys with an airtank and compressor are a very tight install.

I have looked into Wolo's line of higher end electric horns. Check out their site. They have sound files you can download of all the horns. I am probably going with model #809 which is an under the hood version of #808. I called Wolo and the said it is one of the loudest models in the electric line. Model #815 is pretty loud too but a higher tone. Note... the sound files are not necessarily an indication of loudness, but more of the tone. Look at the decibel rating to gauge loudness. Alot cheaper and easier to install!!

I installed

Hadleys air blasters and I love them. I put them on top of my camper shell. It's fun to watch the guys who cut you off on the freeway come right off thier seats with a blast of the air horns. I got mine at Campers World with member discounts and credit card coupons the price OK. LOL on what you choose.

No ned to do that. You just need a 16' tube of, perhaps, 10" diameter and blow a suitable amount of air (or steam) across the end. Hmmm. I might have to try this with an 8' length of 6" PCV. But I will have to brush up on my resonance physics.

Dad remembers hearing those ship horns as a kid. He says they could be heard at least three miles away.

Having already had these on the truck, I would urge you to reconsider . Those things are junk at best. I had two sets, each of which only lasted a short while. Go with the Hadleys or Grovers. You can get the Hadleys in pieces if you already have an air setup (as I do). They can be purchased directly from Hadley's distributor, Components Direct . They are in Illinois. They have a toll free number 1-800-875-4488. You can order any product that Hadley sells, including individual horns, parts and mounting brackets. They are very helpful and friendly to deal with as well.

Train Horns

I just put a set of Buell Train Horns under the bed of my truck.

It is a 4 horn set I got them at the Big Rig Nat's race in MD.

Came with all the airlines and a 12 volt valve. I put an 11 gallon air tank in the bed for now.

All I can say is LOUD Oo. I was going to work one day and a kid about 15 years old was pushing his bike up the hill I say to myself should I :-{} Well I give the horn a little CHIRP as I go by and I look back, the kid has droped his bike and started running up the bank on the side of the road I felt so bad :{

Cliff... . you are bad, bad person . When I first finished my horn install, probably the next day or so, I had to pick my oldest daughter up from school. Lost in a sea of mini-vans, I was talking with one of the Moms when I noticed that her daughter was making faces at me. I gave her a short blast from the Grovers, at which time her Mom dropped the cookie she was eating and spilled her coffee that she was holding . I also felt bad .
