My Wife's Niece is about to buy a new Chevy/Dmax and I am doing my best to convince her that an 05 Dodge/Cummins would be a better choice. I know there are problems with the Dmax but I have never owned a Chevy truck and have no personal experience so when she asks what specifically is wrong with them I'm not sure what points I should bring up. I seem to hear more about the Ford/International problems. In a list of 1 to 10 (if 10 problems exist) with 1 being the most urgent, what would be the most compelling argument against Chevy/Dmax?

Tell her that chevy claims 590 pounds of torque,What they dont tell you is the allison transmission can only handle 520 pounds of that torque. Chevy defuels the engine at start up and wide open throttle so the allison doesnt come flying apart. Make a long story short she will only have 520 pounds of usable torque. :--)

Why would a woman want a mans truck? :D

GMC is GM's mans truck, Chebby is just a sporty wannabe. Maybe you are not old enough to remember, but years ago Chebby trucks were not built the same as GMC's. Chebby was built on a car frame and used coil springs on all fours, where as GMC used leaf springs as they were a real working truck. :)

She (and her Husband) bought a heavy fiver toy hauler, then found out that their 3/4 ton Chevy gasser short bed was not adequate to pull it.

the new ones are 605 torque... and the gm torque management defuels in 1 and 5... in 1 you don't need full torque [gearing multiplication], and in 5, you can't put full torque down as most slushbox will downshift... the chevy trucks are very nice i think. . the IFS doesn't bother me. i don't like trucks that sit way high up. if i had to get a truck with an automatic, the dmax is something i would look at [straight out of the box, the best auto i think]... i don't like that the manual trans with the dmax is still the old trim [300/520]

With todays fuel prices I would have to say MPG.

My brother in-law just bought an 05 D-max and is not impressed at all with the mpg's

IFS = Inferior Front Suspension

GM makes a fine pickup, but a bit too refined and comfortable for my tastes. I really do like the looks of the GMC's.

Most people around here brag about their dmax's and they arent junk, but, they are people that buy a new one every 2-3 years so of course they aint gone have much bad to say. Dmax's have aluminum heads, are asian in origin, computerized everything and jack s@#$ for warranty. How are they in the long run?I also believe that the architecture that the trucks are built is very weak. You can talk all week about the Allison but I still hate the quality of their interiors just to cheap and fisher pricey for my tastes and GM has always been the leader in gimmicks second only to phord. Thats just my opinion!

Have them test drive your truck pulling their fiver toy hauler.
That is the best idea yet! The only thing to improve on that is to tow it to the local GM dealer and switch the trailer over for a back to back test. Then for sure back off and let them buy what they want.

Oh really? When was this? I consider myself to be somewhat of a GM buff and I've never heard what you're referring to in pickups. The 67-72 1/2 tons were offered with coils in the rear but it was an option, not based on Chevy/GMC.

What trucks are you referring to?

Like I said, you are probably not old enough to know. Chebby trucks back in the fifties were basically a car frame with a pickup bed, they did'nt even compare to a GMC. You should dig a little deeper in your history. I was there, you obiviously wern't. :p

Everybody's entitled to make his (her) own mistakes. As O'Reilly says, "You have a constitional right to be a moron. "

Dodge/Cummins are trucks. Ferd and chebby look like they were designed by the marketing department. My tuppence. :)

My '62 GMC had little in common with the Chevys of the same year. They may have looked similar, but two very different trucks. I don't think that V6 was even offered in the chevy.

Back on topic, fuel prices would surely lean a person toward buying cummins.
