Looking for the best price on a BORGESON Steereing Shaft just to replace the worn oem one an a coworkers truck. I put one in an old first gen I had years ago and it was great.

Thanks in advance

Borge Shaft

Heads up. . My shaft over time rusted at the point where one tube slides inside the other..... then one day pulled loose up by the firewall even though it was installed properly and set screw was good and tight. Have solved that problem putting a couple drops of oil at the slide point each time I do a lube job.

I believe it is designed to slide. That takes up length change as the body flexes.

Not so important for the 2wd trucks but critical in the 4wd.

The real problem is the set screw is the only thing holding the gear end in place.

OEM is not like that. It has a positive safety to prevent comming apart.

Set Screw

Maybe I should look into drilling and installing a bolt or cotter key ? I prefer permanant positive fix when possible.

Forget the cotter pin.

The easy way is to mark where the set screws goes against the steering gear spline, then remove the shaft and make a deep "drill spot" on the spline.

Then get a longer setscrew or a bolt that you can put a locknut on. Reinstall the Borgeson, then run the setscrew into the drill spot, then lock the setscrew in place with the lock nut.

Now you have something positive to prevent the yoke from pulling off the spline.

Or you can drill thru the spline and use a bolt and nut, but keep it a small size no larger than 1/4 inch

I believe that was in the instructions for installation when I did mine.

I want another one soon, did we decide who had the least expensive? I can't imagine anyone could resell them for less than the mfg is selling them, unless the mfg doesn't really want to sell one at a time.

Bolt Instructions

Madurski... ..... Bet yur right about that. I had mine put in by a small shop and sometimes they can get in a bit of a hurry.

You could be correct. I never installed one or read their instructions. I used to design steering shafts so my post came from my experience there.

I have been to Borgeson as they are literally only a few miles from where I live. The owner is a friend as we have done business in the past together.

I know they sell individually or at least they did a few years ago.

You didn't specify rag joint or double jointed I have a brand new Double jointed one I never put on yet. Should of got the rag joint it would have been on allready!

If you weren't in such a hurry to go sledding you mighta got it done! ;)

PS, I went by a couple weeks ago, it was getting late and I was hauling, or I'd a stopped and said "hi". :-laf

Pete I sold the sled! I bought my 3rd 81 VW RAbbit Pick UP only this one is a Diesel and its about to become a Turbo Diesel! Not a cummins though, unfortunately. It's a swap and the donor is a 92 Jetta Eco Diesesl that car with a 4. 25 R&P only one VW made and for 2 years only. Got some just for VW Racing. But FIRST I need a Lockout Hub for my Truck. Making progress the steering gearbox is on

I'd sell my Borgeson Double jointed shaft for $185 shipped never been on the truck sitting on one of my sheves within arms reach as I type.

Brings back memories... I ran an 81 rabbit diesel pickup for about 5 years. It was a fun vehicle to drive and the 48 or so mpg was a bonus!

Spent most my driving time with my foot to the floor... . it had a whopping 52 horsepower:-laf

If I can scrounge up some cash to spend on my truck, I'll take that Borgeson shaft off your hands. Unfortunately, I have more important things currently occupying my income (a new tie rod is on the lst first, for instance... ). I'll see what I can pull off.

I have read that some, who have installed the Borgeson shaft, have had it come loose?

I can assure you that if it is installed per the install instructions it will not work loose. I have two of them and they are tight after years of use.

I would rather have seen the pinch bolt style yoke attatched to the gear box stub shaft myself. But as I have said, if the set screw(s) are installed per instructions, it won't work loose. I am quite sure that Borgeson has researched the install and find the method mentioned in the install instructions to be adequate. They would be held liable if the shaft fails when installed per their instructions.
