I'm new so this may be a dumb question.

Can anyone recommend the best diesel fuel for my new truck?

I've seen some stations that sell 'premium'. Is it worth the extra $$$?

What about the big-rig truck stops?

Also, are there any additives I should consider adding with each tank?

Thanks for your help and advice!

Premium diesel is a rip-off, you can make your own by just adding additive. There are several diesel additive brands available, in my opinion they are all about the same. Best thing to do is find a brand that is easy for you to acquire and stick with it. Power Service and Howe's are popular and widely available. A lot of folks use Stanadine but it's harder to come by.

Most fuel brands are exactly the same and even came though the same pipeline, only difference is any additives. The best brand is the station you find that pumps a lot of fuel so as to assure what you are getting is fresh.

Q: What is premium diesel fuel?

There is no definition of premium fuel, so the term eally means nothing and is over used by suppliers. For a descrition of the characteristics proposed for "premium diesel" see this Cheveron

bulletin.

I prefer to run Texaco/Shell Diesel... It smells different, and burns a little better... . then add ½ bottle of Marvel Mystery oil to it, and voila!! Instant smoke! well, more than normal.

You can't go by the brand names. Flying J here sells Shell fuel, but sometimes the fuel comes out of United Refining in Warren, Pa. , sometimes out of Cleveland, and sometimes out of some place in Canada by Toronto. I'd say most of the fuel in NE Ohio and NW Pa comes out of United. Pilot is the same way. I see all the different company's trucks line up at the refinery in Warren.

If you want to be dilligent, take a hydrometer with you and measure the specific gravity of the fuel. You should get more BTUs, thus more power and mileage out of heavier fuel.
