I have a Quad Commander which is exactly the same as VA commander. I like it a lot. You get data logging, so you can recall your max temps, etc. I don't know all you can do with it, because I haven't used it yet.
I got the rail pressure kit, which lets you check rp and fuel pressure. The Quad Commander is exactly same as VA commander which is another reason I bought (still in mail) the C5, because VA offers the C5 with the Commander as one of the options.
I've heard that sometimes if your having problems with readings with the Commander it can be your stock sensers, cause it's using them in many cases. I know it uses the MAP for your boost. Be a good question for Quadzilla, oughta post it (or maybe Bob Wagner for Smarty questions-BTW, I have a Smarty too, and I haven't had any boost reading problems (that I know of))
I did tap into wires in MAP, why don't you like that?

Oh yeah, if you buy a electronic box, you can buy the assoc. harness for that box from Quad, hook it up with the plugs under dash to the Commander, it eliminates tapping into anymore wires that you've already tapped into with the Commmander.
Before I bought the Commander, I checked out the Dakota gauges. They are very good looking and disceet. When they are lighted up, it's the same color as the stock gauges. My A pillar with Commander looks good, but the DD gauges (IMO) really blend in, if you don't like that look of the '747 cockpit' (gauges all over) I dunno about software, seems there was something to get past readings, maybe not.
