I've recently purchased a 2001 Ram diesel with the auto. trans. I was wondering what aftermarket modification poducts are the best? BD, Bully, dynosources etc. ? What mods can be done safely without major mechanical disassembly and that the transmission can handle?

Also the oil pressure in this truck takes a while to come up when starting after sitting for any extended time. It seems to take 5-8 seconds to register oil pressure on the guage. Has anyone experienced this or is this a normal condition? Should I return it to my dealer to let them check into it? Is a preluber a wise investment and where do you get one? Has anyone else used a preluber on their dodge? Thanks -- email address removed --

Ignore your oil pressure gauge at startup, its not accurate, the gauge does not "Turn on" till the ECM completes a self test. I confirmed this by hooking a mechanical gauge up and starting my truck, i had full oil pressure in under 3 seconds. This is pretty well known now. Dont worry about it.

While a preluber is nice, a good one is very expensive and honestly, will not make a diiference in engine life enough to warrant the expense or time installing one.

I particularly like the BD and Bully Dog Technologies products. Their customer service is also top notch. As far as a preluber, it entails running lines from your engine and then back to it. I have yet to see one that doesn't leak oil from the fittings. What's better, knowing your engine will live for about 300K on an average, or coming to a screeching halt when you lose your lube oil through a blown fitting?

Okay, Chris, stop riding the fence and tell us how you REALLY feel. I thought I spotted an Amsoil sticker on your truck the last time we met :D

Well, I guess I'll have to get off the fence then. Ha, ha! Amsoil... ... ... I think at best I'll say that the only oil in the crankcase is and always has been Rotella T. I can't seem to think what sticker looks like or bears the same color as the Am**** ones. The last time I talked about engine oil was about 600 posts ago and I believe the thread was finally closed when it reached like seven pages long. I wonder, though, if that Am**** stuff is good to lube the slide of the Glock with?

Pre luber

D, I installed an alarm system that included an ignition kill. Now I can get in, set my alarm with the remote & crank on it till the batteries die--it will not start!! You can protect you truck from theft & have a pre-luber in 1 easy step.

You will also wear your starter and solenoid out MUCH sooner then normal. Personally, i would rather have my engine only last (conservativeley) till 400k miles then be stuck somehwere with a burned out starter and have to be towed.

Also, your engine is still turning over with no oil for a few seconds when you are cranking it so you are really not preserving your engine life by much.

We have 3 diesel tow trucks which are started and shutdown at least 20 times a day and the oldest has almost 350,000 miles on it and none of them have prelubers and they all run fine.
