Slideout Question????

I hope soon be purchasing a Gooseneck hitch for my 03 3500. The ball has to be removable so I am able to still use the back bed when im not towing the trailer. The trailer is a 12 ton 24ft Econoline.

Where is the best place to purchase a hitch?

I have a B&W turnoverball. Have been very happy with it so far and B&W also makes the 5th wheel companion that allows you to tow 5th wheels with it as well. The website below has the info and more than likely you have a local dealer. There are certainly others out there as well just have not used them.

I have the Diamond hith. It's worked for me but I basically ruined the ball this past weekend. It was completely my own fault and in no way the fault of any part of the hitch. I'm going to be replacing the entire hitch with a B & W with the 5th wheel companion in the future.

B&W has my vote. Easy to install and easy to use. Haven't seen anything better. You can add the 5th wheel companion hitch to it (although a bit pricey) and be able to switch between goose and 5th when (if) needed. They are pretty easy to find just about anywhere.

The advantage to the B&W turn over ball is the companion 5th wheel. The B&W products are very well made, the paint stays on them for years etc. We have two trucks with turn over balls and one companion 5th wheel hitch. Its a great set up and I've had no issues with a lever under the bed.

I like keeping my options open, for the same money a B&W will give you the option of adding a 5th wheel while keeping a totally clean bed when your not towing. You never know when a good deal will come up on a 5th wheel trailer or the need to pull one could arise. I prefer to avoid the adapters on the trailers. I actually order my trailers to go both ways. My toy hauler has two coupler pieces, one is a GN and the other is a king pin. Works great, my trailer's frame was built by Leland. So, the big trailer and both trucks can go GN or 5th. . its nice to have options when you get in a bind and need to borrow a truck. :)

A friend of mine had a Dodge 3500 with the Drop n Lock. It would be very easy to modify the square tube (or build a solid square bar) for a B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch to work with the Drop n Lock. Probably would void the warranty of the B&W, but I don't see that as any possibility of an issue. Especially if the DnL gooseneck ball is rated at 35,000 lbs.

To install/remove the B&W Companion, you either need a person on the ground, or you climb in and out of the bed a couple of times to actuate the locking lever.

I put the B&W on my 07 3500 myself. The thing I like the best about it(all the above) and I can take it in and out of my truck myself. It's actually 3 pieces and very easy to handle. I had the Reese with rails in my 93 and I'm getting to old to try and toss that thing into the back of my 4x4. Good luck.

I would say it is a split axle. They are short axles with a tire on both sides of the I-beam. I have to put all new brakes and tires. It is a mulit-max if that helps.

Ok, I gotcha, disregard my PM response;)

I had dinner with the guys from Econoline several years and they said they get a lot of complaints from existing customers about changing tires and what, but the complaints vs. low cost isn't enough to switch.

I was following one yesterday that was a pintle hitch, I was surprised how far the tires were spread. Does your trailer eat tires fairly fast?

B&W turnover ball is a good choice. I've had several other "removable" hitches in other trucks, but the B&W I have now is the best one I've had hands down!
