Best LED Small Flashlight.......

Man-o-man,,, How did I miss this thread? Being a VFD I have spent way too much on lights. I carry a 3 cell (AA) 3 watt Mag on my belt. Have 2x fire-box, 16 y/o magcharger too many too list. You can take a 5-D cell mag and replace the light bulb with a 4-cell bulb and it will almost kick when you turn it on. Caution:don't try that with rechargeable batteries, it will blow the bulb.



These people worship flashlights.

skydiver, I am a member of that forum. And yes those guys are nuts. I saw a video on there once about a flash light that was held about 4 inches from a piece of paper and the paper lit off in no time. Now that is a flash light. -Jason

I have two Leatherman, 3 AAA battery flashlights from Costco. They come with a leather sheath that you can hook to your belt. These are better and much brighter then a Maglite. A little spendy, but great.

I guess I need to toss in a comment or two for my favorite lights. This isn't a vote for the "best" light, except that in a way it is. There is an old adage that the best tool is the one you have. It's just that high performance lights that are too big or too expensive just aren't there for me. The one I use on a daily basis because I can carry it anywhere with ease is the
Packlight.

When I'm camping, I really appreciate a headlamp. There is something special about having light where you are looking while both hands are available.

Finally, I have upgraded my D-cell Maglites with their LED kit. Wow! I'm amazed how much brighter they are than with the stock bulb and how much light you get from nearly dead batteries.

another vote for surefire... . expensive batteries, but very bright and lightweight. The big 3&4 D cell Mag lights are good, but heavy and the rubber switches have a limited lifespan under routine use. A large mag light does have the ability to double as a means of physical protection. My Petzl LED headlamp gets the most use these days. It is also very bright.

Slightly off-topic, but still pertaining..

Just in case anyone is not aware, these are the newer technology NiMH rechargeable batteries that only lose about 2% of their charge per month, and something like 25% max per year sitting on the shelf unused! This really makes the difference. . Compared to standard NiMH's that lose about 2% per day. .

I like the little rig for the 9v battery. I got a hat as a gift a couple Christmases ago, it has two little LED lites, I pooh-poohed it til I used it on a long trip to look at charts at night. It's great, the light is right there, doesn't totally screw up your night vision, and it's pretty bright. I've had bad luck with Maglites, it seems the bulbs are awfully tender. Do the LEDs hold up any better to being dropped ?

For a cheap LED upgrade, replace your Mag Light bulb with one of their LED replacement bulbs.



You will be amazed, it's like adding twin turbos to the light!!!

We use Streamlights at work. I work in a steel mill, and these lights take serious abuse. I haven't seen one break yet.

Ditto. I use them, with MSHA ratings, in underground mines.

If by "small" you mean pocket size, I've got a Streamlight "Stylus Pro" I carry every day at work and use it about 20-30 times a day; the anodizing is wearing off inspots! It's a single LED run by 2 AAA batteries and it's almost exactly the size of a standard "Sharpie" pen.

It has a pocket clip and the switch is either momentary or ON. I got it at a gun show for about $25. Dillon Precision now has them for $30. I LOVE this light!

The LED doesn't burn out if I drop it or from old age, it lasts a LOOOONG time on 2 batteries and I like the switch a LOT better than the twist-on type. I'll never buy a standard Mag Light or similar again.

I just got mine back from warranty repairs. Just cost me shipping out to california. Got the same one back. I have a 3 AA cell and LOVE it. Got another one to use while my other one was in repair.

Used to be SureFire guy... have at least 5 at the house, but the ones that go with me in the truck are the LED FENIX lights. I have the 160 lumen P3D and the 225 Lumen Tactical T1.



Really like the fact that both have multiple levels of intensity, that can go from high power - 1+ hr battery life, to low power, 8+ hr battery life.
