So my dad is thinking about getting his first diesel (after 2 years of my pleading for him to get one) he is looking at a 06 mega 2wd down in texas. Anyways he was talking to me about the mileage he shoudl get and then he surprised me and said he wants to get a chip to get better mileage. So I want his first diesel to be a good experience, what chip is working the best at getting mileage, he doesn't need anything special.

Thanks

Mopar

Not sure if this helps but my 01 w/ an EZ was better than my 06 w/ the Smarty Jr.

01- 16 mpg city, 22 hwy

06- 14 mpg city, 19 hwy

The EZ added about 1. 5 mpg and I am not seeing much w/ the smarty yet but to be fair, I have not driven enough yet w/ the smarty jr.

Quadzilla and Edge performance both make a chip to increase fuel mileage.

Edge is Mileage max and Quad is Max mileage. Find the 411 on there web pages.

Yes but are'nt these 2 detectable (data saved in computer) by dealer on 06 and above? THat is if Mopartech even cares.

Chips can't be found, programmers can, the only way you can find a chip is either the velcro on the fuse box cover or a completly dirty engine with the sensor connectors clean from when they took the chip off.

Well I have have a buddy who is a tech for dodge and he purposley bought an 05 instead of 06 because they changed the copmuters in the 06 (CAN?) and have more data tracking (more memory). Since I have an 06, I got the smarty jr. over the Edge EZ because of this.

I don't care what the track, if the data never gets to the ECM they cannot record it. That is purpose of the module, we gather info from the ECM and change it between the ECM and the sensor or injector or whatever we are controlling. The ECM never sees it.

With a programmer the ECM can see it because it is changed in the ECM and the ECM has to command it.

Want to increase milage add an intake horn. Gave me 1mpg for $180. Other than that there are a lot of other things to optimize to get better mpg.

It might fool boost and what ever else an Edge does (timing/fuel) but the ECM tracks a lot of info, especailly in 06 and above. Engine load, intake temp, I am not sure what but I,ll see if I can get more info.

The Can based ecms are very sophiticated. They store more info than many of you are aware of. The ecm will save freeze frame data to show many failures that can be incriminating to the box users... ... ... The Smarty is clever enough for most of us and will not stand out to point fingers,Dodge is well aware of what goes on and the 6. 7 is much better at it. I have seen data point me towards box users many times and most owners fess up. If you dig deep enough the truth will come out. ;)

Enjoy your trucks and be happy while you can still afford to fuel them

In my opinion , I have had all 1st, 2nd and 3rd 5. 9L gen. And all of them have got worse on fuel mileage, but I have 4 different chips on my 2nd Gen, on my current 3rd gen 5. 9L I have a Bully Dog Triple Dog w/outlook and I noticed the best fuel mileage, I went from 13MPG empty to 23MPG with just the chip. There's alot of choices out there.

Thanks Bob for giving the details of the ECM. I could not rememebr specifics as it has been a while since I researched it. I am not knocking any one brand here. I just wanted Mopartech to be aware of what can happen on the 06's so he can inform his dad.

$4. 69/gallon in Fountain Valley CA today.

TMRoper... . 10 mpg increase w/ a box? I have never ever heard of this. There has to be more variables here, Please fill us in.

really?

I have an 03 2500 ho with the same setup, but get a max of 20mpg empty running from florida to tennessee going up the interstate and a few US hwys. I run on the performance setting. Are you running crazy larry to get the most mileage? In town in Panama City FL, I get 16-17 mpg empty driving very easily and trying to keep the converter locked as much as possible.

MRfixit actully no, I did nothing else. On my 2nd gen I tried every chip out there except a bully dog, some friends of mine noticed 7-13mpg increase on there power-choker so I thought I would give it a try. And yes it was a 10mpg difference empty and an even bigger difference while pulling, I would get 6-8 mpg pulling my 34' fifthwheel and now I get 18-20mpg I was very impressed, no intake, just a little too noisy exhaust. It sure makes it a little easier to breath at the pump.

No the best fuel mileage comes on the performance mode, not crazy larry. I run on performance mode all the time unless I want to leave a nice cloud of smoke. HA Ha

It's always difficult to debate MPG but it's hard to believe you can get 18-20 mpg towing a 34' 5er. I have owned 2 5ers- 28' and 32' that each grossed 12k. I had them at about 11k pounds. W/ my 01 and EZ and intake/exhaust mods, I never got more than 13. 5 mpg w/ and edge (3. 54 gears 6 speed) . W/ my 06 auto, in the year I have owned it, I never have gotten over 12. 5 stock. I drive 60 most of the time. I have not towed w/ the smarty jr. yet.

It would seem we would hear more about this product if it were so good. My numbers are all hand calculated and I fill to the neck everytime. Do you do the same? I have had my computer tell me 19 mpg while hand calc was 14. It seems to get most confused when I drive 1st 1/2 of tank towing and the second 1/2 non towing.

If you get this mpg, that is great. It just does not seem like the norm.
