I have changed out nearly my whole front end and steering components and still had excessive play in my steering, so out of desperation, I had my 5 yr old boy play with the steering from side to side and after checking everything again I found the culprit..... On the steering column where the one square tube fits in the other that bolts on the knuckle which in turn bolts on the steering gearbox, there was way too much play. After 235000 maybe they wore some, so I know I could just replace them but instead I just spot welded the two together. I know you need to have them sliding in order to get the box off but a little effort and the weld will break free. Now the truck feels brand new.

Just thought I would entertain ya'll

My steering isn't too bad at 246K but it could be better, I will check this out on mine thanks very much for the tip.

I wouldn't weld it. It also moves a little with frame flex and twisting. Plus, if you where in an accident and came into contact with the steering wheel. It is designed to give.

I just touched it. If I hit something it will brake easily. As for the limited flex, I am better off steering straight than allowing for it. I live on a small ranch, and it works great.

Cheers Derek
