I recently purchased a 2003 3500 SRW SWB 4x4 HO 6spd. I am planning on changing the oil in the near future and am in need of some suggestions on a good non-synthetic oil to use. I am planning on using synthetic after I get more miles on the truck, and was also wondering how many miles I should put on before switching to the synthetic. I have heard that you should put 10K on before going to synthetic. Does this sound right?

I am going to "suggest".....

"CI" rated Delo 400 because it is so popular. That will probably start some kind of:-{} !!! I use a different brand.

10,000 miles of break-in before switch-over depends on how you are using your truck. Towing, heavy loads..... 10,000 would be OK. Daily commute on the Highway... . maybe 20,000mi. JMO.

I am planning on Royal Purple as well whn I get to the 22,500 oil change. I have already changed over to it in the transmission and diff. Per the owners manual DC recommends 20K before switching to synthetic.

I use Royal Purple in my wifes Toy (83K and 12 years old) and I did have it in my Durango (67K and 2. 5 years old) before i traded it in. Never had a problem with either of them. As a matter of fact the last time I had the Toy in for a tune-up the mechaninc was amazed at how well it was running.

OIL

Many OTR truckers around here use Rotella T 15/40. And for the most part , most of them get millions of miles logged, So IMO, they must know something. I use Rotella. Just my $. 02.

That would be the Royal Purple Syncromax, I had it in my 02 and it worked well. I'm now using Red Line MTL though.

Most of the common CI-4 oils are similar, but Delvac 1300 super is really packed to the hilt with additives. This makes it stable over longer drains etc. I'll be using D1300 till 15k and then switching to amsoil hdd/marine 15w-40, whenever my truck arrives. There are better dino oils, like schaeffer's etc, but I dont see the point in paying anything over normal dino unless I'm getting a full synthetic.

I get Royal Purple from Napa although I've heard not all of them can get it. I use their 15W-40 diesel oil in my VW and Land Rover, they also have a nice multipurpose grease.

As long as the oil falls within the standards that are laid down by the manufacturer they can not void the warrenty. And Royal Purple is far superior in every one of the specs.

i think i will run royal purple. why dosent amsoil submit to the API standards? i dont like the fact that they dont get approved by everything they need to i dont care how. looks like my engines internals will be stained purple at around 20K. i want to see a mpg gain as alot of people claim with the purple stuff! also alot of people carry this stuff on the shelf. :p i am looking into the purple stuff to see how good it is. i will report back what i find.

Hey, this is a limited oil war, no synthetics

I've seen charts that show Rotella ranked above most other diesel oils. I have used it and like it. It's easy to find and lubes/cools/cleans just like an oil should.
