Yea Gary, this is very interesting. I've been reading some older posts on the 3rd gen side and there is a huge variety of what people use. From what I've read, I do believe that these synchros in our trannies need a tad bit of extra friction to slow down the gears for smooth shifts.

I really didn't know that a "better" lube might be worse for these units, as I didn't know that Penzoil wasn't synthetic. I had just assumed it was.

What do do now? :confused: Go get some Penzoil 3501 or keep running the Amsoil... ... . :{:{

I ran Royal Purple in my previous 5600 for 200,000 miles with no synchronizer issues before I broke 3 teeth off of 6th gear.

This non-synthetic stuff sounds like horse hockey to me.

Godspeed,
Trent

Royal Purple is probably the most popular because it is the easiest to find in local parts houses... I can find it easier than I can Pennzoil.

As noted, each trans is different and will react differently to each oil... mine is horrible with Royal Purple, OK with Amsoil MTF and Pennzoil, and the best with Redline MTL. I have found running a blend of Redline MTL and their heavier MT-90 works the best for me.

You won't know until you try...

Jest what it says in the book. That way if you have any trouble dodge can not say it was not the right lube.

I've run Redline MTL and Torco MTL(?) and they work about the same in my trans - neither offered any significant improvement over the stock fluid.

Pennzoil Syncromesh. It meets spec, has worked fine for over 100k miles, shifts great, price is reasonable as compared to oem which is outrageous. I have no need for experimentation with others.

Be careful with running Royal Purple, it is lighter weight than the other oils mentioned. Have known of two guys fry the RP lube (steved) and ruin a trans with RP (livingEZ-123 on NW Bombers). It is probably fine as long as it's not a hot climate, no heavy towing, etc.

I tried the Amsoil 5w30 series 3000 in my '01, it worked OK, but it was before the transmission lube came out. My '01 liked the Redline MTL better than the OEM lube.
