Looks like the "Startopore" is the best oil filter sold by Cummins for the 24 valve engine? What happened to the Microglass? I just changed the oil in my new '02 truck at 1000 miles, used the one sold by Dodge for the truck as replacement, but want the best available (within reason) for future changes - I still have one brand new Microglass filter left from my old truck, looks the same as the later filters, but guess it's NOT interchangeable...

Stratapore is the best filter media offered by Fleetguard, even better then Microglass (probably a marginal amount though).

The microglass filter is for a 12v engine an should not be used on a 24v. It has nothing to do with the media, but more importantly the filter case. The pressures at the oil filter that the 24v creates exceeds the limits of the 12v filters.

Hope this helps,

Ryan

As told by the Fleetguard rep:

When the 24V models first came out, there were a small number of filter casings that split open on cold starts due to increased oil pressure as compared to the 12V engines. Fleetguard responded with several new part numbers that had beefier casings, but the same size threads. 12V filters will fit a 24V, but in cold weather you'd run a small risk of rupturing one. The "best" Fleetguard number for the 2001 and similar 24V models is LF3894 - it only costs a dollar or two more than the other Fleetguard offerings, so I think it is the one you want.

Edit: Ryan and I must have been typing at the same time! Sorry for the repetition...

I have used a half dozen microglass filters on my 24V, with no problems. I would recommend that you carry a 3894 with you and some oil. I also would not recommend it in cold weather either knowing now what I did not know then.

If it were me I would use the microglass, and not waste it unless I knew someone that would trade me a 3894 for it.

Wandering around in my usual dense mental fog, I was wrong - and the filter I have IS the Cummins Stratapore 3894 - so based upon what I'm hearing, it is safe to go ahead and use it on the new truck... Especially in the summer, I shouldn't have any concerns about cold weather starts causing any problems...

Thanks for all the help guys!:D

God, I *hate* senility! :p
