I was just wondering what is the best oil filter wrench to buy. I have a 2016 and realize my old filter cap wrench won't work. Would like to get a wrench that is easy to use and won't damage filter when installing. Thank you for any replies. Please if possible include price and purchase location.

I use one of those pliars type filter wrenches on mine. It crushes the filter a bit, but it does a good job at gripping it. I put my axle under a jackstand and pull the passenger front tire (air tools helps here). I then gain access to the filter through the cutout. Just before unscrewing it completely I put one of those gallon zip lock bags around it. It then blops into the bag, and I set it aside. First filter change is a bear due to how tight they put those darn things on, so expect it to give you a hard time.

I have always just used a simple metal strap wrench, I still use the one I used on my 1991 when that truck was new........You don't really need a wrench to install the new one, it only needs to be tightened 3/4 of a turn after the gasket touches the filter mount. If you are crushing the new filter with any kind of wrench when installing it, that is waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy too tight.........

I hear you but how does the gorilla at the factory get them so tight without crushing the filters?

I'd suspect it's more of an issue that the rubber gasket is not properly coated with oil when the 1st filter is installed at the factory.

Some think its necessary to remove parts from the engine to remove from inside the engine. Other then the mess I made doing it thru the fender well, its a much simpler way. Especially if you have the cover cap that prevents spilling, and no need for the zip lock bag.

I used to do my 2nd gen from the top, by just removing airbox tube that went to the turbo. But the 4th gen is so much more of a stretch than the 2nd gen, with more junk to remove. I need to buy that cover cap. I just have a hard time spending that much on something that's really nothing.... well, I did spend quite a bit on the aluminum fuel "cap" so I should just probably shut up and buy it already. :{

I bought a metal strap wrench from TSC that came with 4 bands of different diameters. My old strap wrench wasn't big enough to remove the water separator. Works great.

I have always used a web strap wrench on my RAMs. What are people using through the wheel well hole? Snoking

Thats the one I use 4" diameter. Fits up thru the fender well nicely.
Just found a pic I had of mine that I use.....
