This eng. has been a good one. It was used as a cattle hauler befor I bought it. Come to find out it had been running 1500 deg EGT for several thousand miles. After investing 10 grand into upgrades and repairs Banks, new transmission, new rear, etc I've got oil coming out from the head gasket. No not the V/C but the head gasket. So since I drive this beast pulling 36,000 lbs on a weekly basis of 3,000 miles I might as well go with a cummings new or recon Or a great low milage motor. I have been VERY impressed with this motor. Its not the fastest hotshot out there but gets the freight delivered on time. Thanks, Mike

How in the h*** are you stopping a 36K lb trailer in any kind of reasonable distance? Even with an exhaust brake & trailer brakes you must be planning your moves like a super tanker captain.

The truck is rated at maybe 15K lb towing and you're routinely doubling it? What am I missing here?

I just don't get it - your safety, forget your safety - how about the safety of the rest of us on the road, is worth more than what it would cost to use a PROPERLY sized TOOL (read truck) to tow that kind of load.

The engine will safely tow that load - the rest of the truck is what concerns me.

Brian, My truck is under the SAME DOT reg's as a Semi. I do my pre & post trip inspection just like the big boys do. Not to worry bout the braking of a 36,000 lbs truck coming down Mt Shasta, Ca. Its fine I have over 2 million SAFE miles in the hotshots. We get paid very well and I for one invest several thousand's in brakes for the truck and trailer per year. Sorry if I got you concerned about the Hotshots. But we are a safe group of guys even if we do clear $ 2,500. 00 a week After exp. & repairs. Still like the 92 over a 2001 as well. Best regards, Mike

David/Mike,
What are the DOT regs pertaining to trailer weight versus manufacturer's max towing capacity? I'm a bit confused when DC says towing capacity is 15K lbs and you're pulling 36K lbs & DOT compliant.

Brian

GVW is all all based on your tags. I have a Fooooord thats only reg @ 32,000 while the Dodge is @ 36,000. The apport tags are used to base weight. Really has nothing to do with manuf. rating. I see guys pulling grain in big trucks weighing in at 105,000 when they are reg @ 80,000 Its up to the operator to follow the DOT regs and rules. Just last week we had a Nation wide " Super saftey inspection" 72 hr blitz by DOT Both my trucks were inspected Mine in La, and Davids in Ky. All passed with flying colours. And I had 13 K of Hazmat on board. There are Approx 25,000 1 ton hotshots running the roads in the USA alone. They do handle the weight very easy. Once again if you have a safe operator who keeps his truck in good shape then he has a safe truck. Thats what this is all about. Safe operation is the key to everyones safty. Best regards, Mike

Hey Mike!

Question for you... . Is this recon Cummins equipped with the older style Bosch "VE" injector pump that came standard on our vintage Rectangular trucks or are you upgrading to the more precision P7100? Just a thought, but if I was laying out that much money for a new '12 valver' I would want a Bosch P7100 on my list.

Just a consideration... ... ... . Keeno

Keeno, good question ! To be honest with you..... not sure I do know because of the @#$####@ EPA I cant get the larger HP motor Has to be the same 160 pony one. I'm on the road now layed over in Dothan Al headed for Pa with some lightweight signs till I do get the new motor in. Hope all is well. Best Regards, Mike

Mike,
I believe the rule is you can't put an older engine (before your model year) in the truck but higher horsepower shouldn't be a problem. That's the way I remember it but it has been a while since I read that.
