I just got my 2013 3500 SRW Aisin LB 4x4, first automatic I have ever owned. Any suggestions on DEF, such as were to purchase at lowest cost and any reason to pick one brand over another??

The DEF pumps at the diesel islands of truck stops are generally the lowest price per gallon for DEF. Any recognized brand will work just fine - it's just a solution of urea and distilled, demineralized water.

There is warning about filling the DEF tank full if your in an area where the solution may freeze. Need to leave some room for expansion if temperature gets below 17 F. Ken Irwin

Wally World has the "Blue DEF" for $11. 97, (2 1/2 gallon container). (I think it's around $13. 17 online. ) There is always a Walmart nearby if your on the road and need some.

I have been filling the DEF bulk at the pumps at larger truck stops. Have not paid more than $2. 99 a gallon so far and as little as $2. 80.

I don't need DEF in my old truck, but have been wondering.
How much DEF do you use per fill up, or per gallon of diesel ?

I've seen some posts that say DEF usage should be about 1 gallon evey 1000 miles. However, it seems to be alot like fuel mileage, depends on many factors. Towing with my truck in the montains, it dropped pretty fast. Empty, just driving around, it seems to be barely move. Ken Irwin

On the first 1000 towing miles I used about 2. 5 gallons of DEF. It seems that useage has gone down from that first top off. My 13 only tows, in the first 10,000 miles I have maybe 300 miles without the trailer behind. So I dont have any idea how much DEF it would use running without a load.

I got about 1800 miles out of my first 1/2 tank of DEF. Topped it off with 2. 5 gallons and got 2300 this time around. I just topped it off for the second time yesterday. Those are highway miles, no towing/hauling. BTW, I picked up a case of Valvoline DEF (2 x 2. 5 gal jugs) for about $22 at NAPA about two months ago.

On average DEF usage should be about 50 gallons of fuel to 1 gallon of DEF... I'm not sure why this is true with the Cummins setup because I've read, GM (DMax) is like 100:1 on average. Seems Cummins likes to put a little extra in for good measure... . Either that or GM uses more EGR, so less NOX needs to be treated.
