Since your head is off and you are going to install studs go ahead and bottom tap that block.



Its the only right way in my opinion to properly install the studs.

How many threads do you add to the bottom? What size tap is it and how do you keep the shavings out of the internal areas? Seems less risky to shave the valve cover, no?

If I remember right its m12x1. 75

Just use a telescopic magnet and you'll get all the shavings.



If you bottom tap there is no need to clearance the valve cover.



When a block is bottom tapped you will get full thread engagement with the studs which does not happen if you do not bottom tap.



The boss is already plenty deep to be bottom tapped.
