It's leaking badly enough to price them out. Any inside scoop? I think I can swap it myself, but I'm not sure I want to get into a rebuild, especially if the price is comparable...

Thanks! :)

2nd vote for PSS. I just put his fast ratio conversion in my '97 and it drives like its on rails. Hardest part was flushing the system, not swaping the box.

Okay, that's great. Any particular city or contact info? Also, we are talking about the steering box (I think that's what it's called), not the power steering pump, right?

I would be glad to help out. My dad helped me with mine a rebuilt unit at $150. 00 exchange on my 1ST GEN.

Dad works for local parts warehouse. . :D

I got the psc and even though it was kind of expensive it was well worth it. My steering is better than ever and I am not fighting the steering wheel the whole time I drive like I used to. Well worth the money.

Right. Power Steering Services Springfield MO. 417-864-6676. "Chip" is who you want to talk to. Mine was about $180 exchange. My 98 12v Ram now steers like a car. Dodge has put the WRONG ratio steering box in many of our Ram's on the assembly line. They use the old GM Saginaw box. An excellent box but the outside appearance for different ratios is the same. Maybe GM knows the difference but Dodge does not. Before you install the box turn the input shaft and count the turns stop to stop. 3 turns is good. 4&1/4 will wander all over the road. -- email address removed --

Lance!! :) That sounds promising. I'll shoot you an email, but may have to wait until after Christmas to get this done...

Excellent information, folks. I'd never heard that about the wrong boxes being used. Mine feels okay, just leaks like a seive now. I also have had to change the fluid more than once (165+K now) as it gets pretty nasty and steering gets stiff. Don't know if the two are related. At any rate, leaking on the street is a nuisance; leaking on the track is unacceptable.

Thanks everyone! :)

I got my box redone by PSC in my 91 1st Gen- about $180, shipping included. Local parts stores want more than that for a stock rebuild. I wore one of them out in 2 years, just out of warranty. I liked the upgrade-steering was much mroe responsive and had a better feel. Too bad I didnt get it off the truck to put on my 92 when I sold the 91.

Tell me more about Power Steering Service- do they do upgrades like PSC, or do they just do stock/ OEM rebuilds?

I have only had experience with the box Dodge chose to use a Saginaw box as many call it made by GM in their Saginaw Michigan Plant. It is a rugged box that should never need replacing except maybe with severe off-road use. The reason I replaced mine was to get the correct ratio and cure the wandering problem. Dodge no doubt does not know different ratio boxes look the same on the outside or it was a shipping error (maybe on purpose) from GM. For whatever reason the WRONG box got put in a lot of Rams. "Chip" at Power Steering services phone 417-864-6676 has the training and experience and does the rebuild properly. I paid $180 exchange plus shipping from me to him (31 pounds) and it was worth every penny. I was on the verge of getting rid of my 98 12v and now you could not get it away from me. Thanks to a gentleman named Quigley that wrote to TDR and his article published I learned that there was different ratios. If you decide to install it yourself e-mail me and I will walk you through it. I did mine myself. -- email address removed --

Whatever you do DO NOT buy a rebuilt from parts stores. I went thorugh 3 of them on my 3500, they are all junk, all they do is replacing seals, that's it.

They last approx 1000 miles, regarding the store sold (Autozone, Napa, etc. ).

Finally I had better results from a used 125,000 miles junkyard bought box

Get a qualified shop to rebuild it, keep what you have, or get a new one, don't waste any money on aftermarket.

make sure, not matter which box you use, to install a DSS. will save your next box and supports the output shaft and saves the seal. one of the best bombs i have done and easy, too .

I have heard the part Store rebuilds are junk too.

Stay far, far away from AGR. Their quality control is non-exsistent. So is customer service. My $$$ AGR Chuck loosened up after 1 month. I had to pull it out again and send it back for warranty work. When I got it back there was no documentation what so ever with it saying it had even be looked at???

I didn't feel like playing musical-steering-boxes, so a bought another $$$ and nothing to write home about box from Enterprise Engine that had a local rebuilder that knew their shortcomings rebuild them and do a few things to make them tighter. It felt is was a good box, but not by any stretch of the imagination, great.

I ended up put it on eBag. Started to feel guilty as hell when I started to take pictures of it. I felt it was junk. I promised the buyer if it was no good, I would refund the money in a heartbeat. I think I got a third of what I paid for it. It ended up being good.

Off rant

But the again, TDR member BigBadDodge had great luck with his AGR box.
