48RE 2nd gear slips?

stall on full stop

Hey guys so I have an 05 cummins with a loaded utility body a crane and an air compressor. My truck does a lot of stop and go driving with a heavy load and it is taking a toll on my transmission. I was wondering if there is a better upgrade for my 48re that can take this kind of beating on a day to day basis. Any thoughts?

a trans builder that knows these 48's is best bet, what part of the country are you in?
Firepunk has a solid rep.
if around AZ
Dave Swanson.

I am on the east coast over in ct. So maybe ill pickup a used 48re and have someone build it out so i have one ready when mine craps out. Is there anything specific that i would have to change in the trans or just have someone rebuild it to oe specs?

Give Pat Barrett a call at Level 10 Transmissions. He's located in Hamburg, NJ 973-827-1000. He "built" two transmissions for my 2003 trucks. Very good guy to deal with and stands behind his work! Expensive but good- last transmission cost me $6500.00. Complete rebuild including both cooler lines.

stock power? these trans are really good at stock power levels. Id get a shift kit installed. and call it a day.
a shift kit and a better cooler are about all i'd do.

I went to Jawja to Jeff Garmon https: (//www.garmonsdieseldrivetrain.com) when my transmission fainted. He put in a LOW STALL torque converter on his stage 1 transmission and that has been one of my favorite improvements. The truck feels so much "lighter on its feet" empty. When loaded, it used to rev and feel like it was going nowhere until lockup. Now, rpms stay low and that Cummins torque shines.

3xx to a shift kit and low stall tc.

Call Georend and ask advice on parts and which builders they supply in your area.

I love my 900/400 TC from them. If your not towing heavy, dont use a triple disc, they lock HARD.

I love it! Great info! So shift kit and low stall converter would be best. And it is mostly stock power. The only thing i did was install a bully dog gt tuner in to move her along.

I'm new to the site and late on posting to this thread, but I lost the transmission on my Ram 2500 (5.9) about 5 years ago and replaced it with a Jasper - also added a HD Allison transmission cooler up front - and have not had a problem since. FYI

Man they got nice stuff! Might have to go that route. Do you have to buy there torque converter or can you use the stock one.

If you only buy one non-stock item make it the TC. A stock rebuild with a good single disk is head and shoulders above the stock transmission. You can take a transmission refreshed with stock parts and a shift kit and double the lifetime at twice the power level, add a TC and it becomes oh so more useful. ;)

Milage

Thanks for the tip. If you don't mind me asking how many miles were on your original transmission just for a reference.

The milage on my 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 when I had to replace the transmission was 109,242. I was towing a 12,000# 5th wheel at the time - across the desert from Albuquerque to Bakersfield during the month of August. This involves several long mountain climbs and the temperatures were between 95 and 105 degrees. I DO NOT believe these conditions justify a transmission failure, but the end result to me was $4,493.28. This included the Jasper transmission, the installation of an Allison Cooler in front of the radiator, the install kit and the labor. Since that time I have also lost my #4 injector which is totally unacceptable for this to happen at 138,832 miles. However, my present mileage is about 214,000 and all is running well. Hope this information is of some value to you.

I should add that I have made several other trips with the 5th wheel and a smaller RV trailer on the same route as well as a 10,000 mile trip back to Georgia, Louisiana and Missouri with the smaller RV - all without incident.

I totally agree with this^^
Firmer shifts and a TC that wants to go when you you hook a trailer up.
