2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Best Steering Box for the money? Cardone?

Looks like I may need to replace the steering box. What brand are you using? Is a rebuilt one ok? Is Cardone any good? Should I look at a new one from the dealer?

You are taking chances with rebuilt or new. I have been through 2 rebuilt units and will be installing my second new(OEM) gearbox this weekend - in the last 6 months.



It is amazing how crappy these things are. The new box that I just pulled out had quit a bit of side to side slop in the input shaft and pitman arm shaft along with significant bump steer. The two rebuilt units had quite a bit of play that could not be adjusted out of them and had very vague feeling through the steering wheel, almost no resistance in the wheel.



The rebuilt units were bought from two different local places. The new ones from Dodge. I just received the warrantry replacement box from Dodge for the first new unit. I have been searching for suppliers for the internal parts for these units to rebuild the next one myself. So far no luck.

Check E-Bay. There was a fellow selling some brand new ones a while back.

Call Performance Steering Components(PSC). they have very good, reliable and lower geared boxes. I think they are only about $200. They are much better than the stock ones and I can turn the steering wheel with my pinky finger they makes steering so easy.

Also, to make the box and sector shaft even last longer, get a DSS steering stabilizer from Solid Steel Industries. Their design of a stabilizer is the best in the business. It only runs like $150 and installs real quick. Good insurance as well, so your sector shaft doesn't go out and cause you to get another box.

I can not find there number. Do you have it or there web site? I already have the DSS. I did the over center adj and it helped quite a bit. I would like to get it back like it was when new but fear buying a new box and it not helping any.

I just replaced mine this last December. Then I went to install new shocks and found it was bad again. Took it back to Dodge and they installed a new one under warantee. I paid for the first one in Dec but not the second one. I have a DSS on the way and hopefully that will solve my problem or at least help it out. There was a thread last week about aftermarket gear boxes you might want to perform a search and check it out. I went back to the dealer because they warantee their repairs for a year. Being it was only six months I took advantage of it. If it goes out again I will get a heavy duty aftermarket gear box.
