I went with MOPAR to match my factory gauges. It looks great and was easy to install, just bolt down the gauge and plug in the wiring harness. It mounts on top of the dash next to the A pillar.

I don't believe the 91 has provisions for a tach in the harness.

I bought a tach from Isspro www.issproinc.com and mounted it on the column using a gage cup and tie wraps. There was no place in the factory dash to add anything.

I'm not 100% thrilled with the location, but it's not permamnent so it can easily be moved.

I bought an alternator activated unit. I had to remove the back of the alt and hook a wire to one of the rectifyer terminals, but that was really easy. I checked the rpm with an optical tach and my unit is right on.

Isspro has a good selection of tachs, and they have the kind that use a crank sensor as well.

Tiny Tach is another alternative. It uses a pick-up on an injector line. You can't beat the price (~$60). When it dies (3-5yrs) I may look at a more pricey one.

I'm looking at an Isspro tach to match my other Isspro gauges. I believe I read here before that a wiring harness or connector can be purchased that will plug in to the factory tach plug under the dash of the '92 and '93 models. The sensor is already there on the crank pulley.

Old Smoky, I was under the impression that the original factory tach was no longer available over the stealer counter. Is your Mopar tach something else? Thanks.

Forrest, I haven't gone under the dash to look yet, but from what I understand, there should be a 4-pin connector under there that is tach-ready. Good luck. :)

Forrest- I got my tach from the local Subaru dealer. They carry Jeep, which is Mopar, and they found one in there books. Sorry, I don't have the P/N. I would think that any Chrysler dealer should be able to find/get it.

JFitzgerald-It is not the factory tach. It was made to fit the rigs that didn't come from the factory with one. I guess it would be similar to aftermarket. I haven’t seen a rig with tach from the factory. I don't see a place where they could put one.

There is a connector under the dash, on the vehicles equipped with the pickup, but I can't remember the number of pins. It is located in the upper left hand corner. I remember it being easy to find.

Smoky, The factory tach was on top of the dash toward the left A-pillar. Here's a pic someone posted before. It shows the factory tach option, plus aftermarket pyro & boost. Could you let me know what the Mopar tach cost if you don't mind? Just wondering how it compares to the Isspro tach. Thanks

I would be real interested in knowing where i can get an addapter that will plug into the stock pickup on my truck

thanks

Best Tach

You might try calling Patrick Delaney at Gale Banks Engineering (800-438-7693 ext. 4127) weekdays between 6a & 6p.

They have a tach that plugs right into the harness under the dash, (if yours is already setup for it) approx. $211.

I checked my local dealer and was told it is no longer available.

There have been a few factory ones on Ebay. They went for about $220.

Happy huntin'

Ron

I could have sworn that Isspro (and possibly others) made tachs that plugged into the stock '92+ wiring harness.

Anyway, quickly checking Diesel Injection Service's web site, I see that they have the Isspro R8503 tach for '92+ trucks for almost exactly half the cost of the Banks one.

I think the thing to do if you want one that plugs into the factory harness is just call up one of the more reputable shops and ask them. I mention DIS above because that's who I went with to get my gauges.

You may have gotten one of the last of those. I believe someone posted a while back that DC was out of them and did not plan to re-stock. Lucky you! You still making BHAF mounts? BTW, your PM box is full.

The wire harness for the Isspro 2" tach is part number #R8912-92

The 4 pin in line connector taped to the wiring harness leading to vehicles fuse panel is where the connector plugs in.

For 2" Tachometer Installations: Connect the leadwire white wire to the grey/light blue tracer terminal. Connect red wire to the second terminal adjacent to the grey/light blue wire. Connect the green wire to the third terminal (orange) and Black to the fourth terminal. The yellow wire on the harness is not used and should be kept from shorting to any terminal or ground.

I bought mine a couple of years ago, lucky me!

I am busy with BHAF mounts, and am ready to make more. Those dang PM boxes fill too quickly. We need more space.

Does anyone know what the tach pickup on the crank balancer looks like? On my balancer I see a square cutout roughly 1/2" by 1/2". Is that it? Thanks, Henry

FWIW - there have been some problems with ISSPRO tachs. I still don't have mine working and have tried 2 different tachs. I'm going to try a different brand and see if that helps. I'll be watching this post to see what all of you have done.
