I'll be needing tires before to long and I would like to get something in a load E range because I tow. I want to go to a taller tire with a bit more of an agressive tread design. I'm running Michelin 215's from the factory and they wear great, but get stuck really easy. Any suggestions? I don't want wheel spacers, either. TIA

John

If you tow you are kind of stuck with the 215-85-16 tires unless you get a set of 2000 or newer wheels. The standard tire on those is now 235-85-16.

I installed 235-85-16 tires and wish I hadn't. It isn't worth the hassel for the slight gain in tire size. There are several on the website who have used 235s with no problem, maybe some of them will post.

Extreme1,

What problems did you have, rubbing? When I bought my truck used, the dealer had put on new General Grabbers, 235's. They never rubbed with 110 bales of hay on. That's about the most that I had on though, mostly I load up my gooseneck which minimally loads the rear axle.

I went with 215 Michilins when I replaced, mostly to see if the handling in snow would be better (it did not). My tread ware is showing signs of too much torque being applied to often. I was thinking of going back up in size.

In that other 3500 tire thread, there is a mention of 7:50 x 16's. That sounds worthy of investigating.

John,

I am on my second set of 235's on my truck. Yes the rears are closer but are not rubbing and I never have had a problem with them. My trailer adds roughly 1900 pounds in tongue weight loaded.

Since we both have 4:10's I think you will like the "gearing" change with the 235's. Makes about a 7% difference (70 mph indicated = 74. 9 actual mph) and it helped with my economy as I can't drive under 65 loaded. ;)

I would get Michelin LTX M/S if you want the Cadillac of tires. I currently am running Kelly SWR's and they are ok. Less money, but don't have the ride of the Michelins.
