Clearance needed for Fifth wheel trailer.

Another vote for Michelin LTX M/S tires. I've got 30k on my 245s, with well over half of the tread left.



If you're only getting 25k out of a set of quality tires, you've got something else going on.
 
I have been able to get over 40,000 from BFG AT's, load range D. I went with Bridgestone Revo's this time around because I wanted the load range E that was not available with the BFG's.

I am running 55PSI in the front and 45 in the rear. I use to run about 60 in the front and found that the center of the tires would wear out long before the outside. I am seeing even wear at this pressure (even with a winch up front).



As for an exhaust brake, I would love to run one, but until I rebuild the auto transmission, I'll have to pass.



I'm wondering if there is a correlation between brake wear and tire wear. I'm remembering a TDR article about brakes that stated "the brakes don't stop the truck, the tires do". Therefore, if I'm using up my brakes to stop (I live in a hilly city), would I then be using up tires as well???? Most of my driving is stop and go.



Any thoughts??

Firestone Steeltex. I've never gotten more than 30K out of michelins or M55's. I'm sure I'll get at least 50k out of my Firestones. Bad new though. My tire guy says they've quit making them. Not sure what they make that's similar. I'll find out in a few more years.
 
I have had Michelins on four different vehicles (3 trucks and one car) and have never got less than 60,000 miles on them. As long as you put in the pressure on the side of the tire and rotate every 8 to 10,000 miles you should get the same.

BigMike - The Transforce HT/AT is the replacement for the Steeltex R4S/AT. As for me, I have always had good luck with Coopers, and since I do a lot of hunting and winter driving in "up nort" Wisconsin, I went with a more aggressive LT265/70R17E Cooper Discoverer STT. They are awesome tires!
 
Is the max air pressure 65 do they handle the loads of the stock 80 psi. I got 90,000 miles out of Michelin LTX A/T's. Now I have LTX M/S I'll see how long they last. But I'd like to go to a 32 or 33 tall but I don't want to get to wide. I like the 255/85/16 but don't like the 65psi.

Hey Mike I hade the same problem they are replaced with Firestone TransForce. They have a similar tread design but, they don't have any white lettering. I bought a set a few weeks back and I really enjoy them but, you can only run 60# of air they tend to walk with any more than that. Hope this helps.
 
I vote for the costco/Michelin combo (load range E). My 95 came with Good years which lasted about 35000 miles. The Michelin's about double that (65 to 70K) under the same driving conditions.

25,000 out of 1 brand tire - I can see - out of many brands... hmmm.



You state the alignment is right on - is that a thrust angle alignment or just the front end? If the front isn't in line with the back, you are dragging your back tires some - causing wear.



Do you drive on pavement/concrete/gravel/dirt - what is most common in your area?



You also don't state what size tire you run, what pressure you run, do you run empty or loaded, do you pull a trailer, do you have stock rims - if not are they the stock size?



All these affect tire wear.



Please give us more details.

What load range are you running? I have the factory Michelin LTX M/S, load range E with 55,000 miles and looking to get another 5,000 to 10,000. It sounds like your truck is pretty nose-heavy. You might just need a higher load rated tire that doesn't flex so much. It also sounds like your road conditions and driving requirements are contrary to long tire life. Have you talked to a tire dealer or friends in the area who are subject to similar conditions. Maybe some local advice would be more appropriate.



Adjust your rear brakes too.

My 2003 4X4 has the original BF Goodrich Rugged Trail tire on it. It will turn 100,000 miles this week. Mostly all highway miles but that is still amazing. I am ashamed to say they have only been rotated one time! Tires are still not down to the warning bars but close. I will be putting a set of 315's on it in a couple of weeks before real winter sets in here in central Texas.
