I thought maybe we could have a CIVIL discussion of what lube is best for the transfer case. My choice at present is Amsoil 5W-30. I know there are all types of lubricants being used besides ATF.

Please report your observations such as effect on fuel economy, running hotter or cooler and anything else you can think of. I see no difference in fuel economy, no discernable difference in operating temperature.

My main motive is longevity, not fuel economy. If I have to sacrifice something, I would rather have it be fuel instead of expensive hardware.

Do you have the 5w-30 in there now? It's my understaning, that your just supposed to use ATF, nothin' else, BTW I have Amsoil ATF in mine.

I am running the Amsoil 5W-30 at the present time. It is my belief that ATF is used because it is the most fuel efficient choice. It is not, in my opinion the best choice for long transfer case life.

If I am mistaken, please let me know. That is why I started this thread.

LE 7500 Monolec Power Fluid would work better and give less wear than ATF, according to Kevin Dinwiddie. I have been using Chevron Dexron 3 ATF and changing it every 15,000 miles. The LE 7500 fluid is also good for power steering, he said. One more thing to try when I get the chance. :)

Amsoil 5W30 in t-case with no problems! Temp runs about 175* crusing at 75 mph with no load and jumps up to 210/220 while towing 13,000 pound 5th wheel.

Ambient air temp also affects how hot or cold the temps run.

Here is some Specs on Tcases from the Dodge Ram.org website.

An here's the link - Transfer case specs. Please note the fluid fill specs are in PINTS.

There are some comments on different fluid that is used.

I just changed my T Case fluid when I changed the rear output seal. Mine took about 2 & 3/4 quarts with spillage ;) I also used Amsoil. I had some ATF leftover when I changed my transmission fluid.
