Grille inserts in winter ?

Ok first off this thread is intended for informational purposes and is not to start a flame war.

My questions:

1. Who's twins have the best reliability?

2. Who's twins have the easiest installation?

3. Who has the most twin sets in production?

4. What twin setup is the most value for the money?

5. Cosmetics, which sets look the best?

6. Which sets will allow for use of both batteries and not having to move the oil filter?

7. Who is the cheapest?

8. Is the Turbonetics wastegate a good one?

Once again, this thread is for informational purposes for the forum users and myself, and not intended to start a p-ssing match.

Twin Turbos

How many canidates are there for this study? Seems like a pretty small group of us that are doing work in this area.

No doubt Mitchells have the greatest number of systems on the road.

One thing that makes your study more difficult is the fact that not one twin combo fits all. I have four, and EE has at least two systems. A number of variables exist.

Interesting topic.

I'll answer the wastegate question.

I am running a turbonetics wastegate and I'm not overly impressed with it. They just weren't designed to run at the boost pressures and drive pressures we are working with.

I drive my truck harder on the street than anyone I know. Everytime I pull out of the driveway, I make sure the wastegate is still working properly. :)

As I log more and more miles, the wastegate is beginning to open sooner and sooner. It was set at 59-60 psi now it is more like 52-54 psi. Spring is weakening I supposed from both the hard use and high temps. The drive pressure that we use (60 psi+) is more than the wastegate was designed to handle. It has recently started leaking soot each time the gate blows off. There is obviously no seal on it that would live at 2000°+. The wastegate relies on tight clearances of the shaft and housing to prevent exhaust gas leakage. With extreme temps and constant use the clearances loosen up and leakage (aka. soot) becomes a problem.

But it's fairly cheap and if mounted properly does an excellent job of controlling boost. I haven't looked too seriously at the HKS brand $7-900 wastegates due to the price. Maybe they are designed better?

Hope that helps.

Chris, did you get the same wastegate that I have? To date I have had no problems with my setup, it works for me and I like the way it drives. I will tell you I don't pay allot of attention to the guages, boost sometimes especially low just seeing at how reactive the truck is, funny the difference in response as time goes along and I tweak the low end more, EGT I rarely look at as it is no issue just watch it sometimes and see how it is sweeping.

Jim, I don't think your waste gate is a Turbonetics. If it is the Billet one in your pictures I think it is made by Extreme. I called the place that sells them and it is made by the salesman's brother and they were all on back order. I may be wrong.

It is an Extreme, guess I had a brain fart! Could have been that I was out Priming on the truck:D

Jim, I was out in the garage Sunday morning at 6 am and finished my twins. I took it for a ride and I can't get over 15psi and with the Comp 20psi. I think the wastegate is opening to soon. It is a turbonetics. I am getting a big black cloud behind the truck so I know I'm getting enough fuel. I am going to disconnect the wastegate and go try again. Could there be to much drive pressure and it is pushing the vavle open? Anybody have any ideas? (Mark/Jim)

I feel the need for SPEED!! :D

The way mine is hooked up is actually wrong but it's the only way it will work at these pressures. I ran air out of the little turbo(were the wastegate air usually comes from) to a regulator(air compressor type) then to the top hole in my wastegate, so what I'm doing is keeping it from blowing open till a set PSI. I did the setting part just by loosening the regulators knob all the way the trying it out, the adjusting it in(tighten) 1/2 round at a time. It will not work any other way, I tried it all! Also I have no spring tension on the wastegate(screw is backed all the way off). If you still need help PM me and I'll call you or give you my number, shame I'm not there, my sister lives in Wilsonville.

Here is a blurry shot of the wastegate!

T, I uploaded these two pics I took not long ago while the truck was outside for better light, hope this helps.

Christian, without sounding like a smart ass why is everyone having so much trouble with the wastegates? Am I just in the green for now, I guess I'm either easy to please or have a limited mind, the only thing I watch is low boost smoke and rolling into the throttle and not hammering it. If mine does fail I may give you a shout about the one you mentioned. I have like 5K on my Twins now!

Thanks Jim, I just got back from church and am going outside and try a couple of things. Of course I couldn't keep my mind from wandering at church. :D I don't think I remember a word that was said. :D I'll let you know how I make out.

I forgot, what about running the waste gate backwards so the exaust pushes against the valve to help keep it closed?? We have enough boost to open it.

The wastegate I use is from Turbonetics, if you type in turbonetics.com it sends you to This if you type turboneticsinc.com it send you to the main site. The one I have is the billet wastegate, I was told it has a 42MM opening, as far as the inlet I'm not real sure as I didn't measure it. The pipe I used for the inlet is 1 5/8, I talked to them about setting it up and they wanted me to run full pressure to the bottom of it and regulated to the top so I did and couldn't get it past 46 PSI so I went back to the old way. Correct, I run zero spring pressure, I have not had any problems with the wastegate opening too soon or bouncing... . knock on wood!
