What is the best way actually to drain out the trans. automatic. I am switching to amsoil and would like to get it all out of the converter. Then, how much fluid does it take to fill'er back up? Thank. . B. J. Deal:confused:

B. J. the only way I know is to unscrew the ten valve body bolts about 4 turns and let the fluid drain overnight. If the converter is a lockup type there is no drain plug in the converter front housing. If the converter has a drain plug, place the plug in the lowest position and pull the plug. the converter will drain almost every drop that way. Other than pulling the trans and taking it apart you are not going to get all the old fluid out. Another way to do it would be to drain the unit and loosen the valve body bolts like stated above. Then drive the truck about 10-15 miles and repeat the process. Someone may have better advice, this is just from my own experience. Before I forget, the torque is 100 inch pounds on the valve body bolts when you go to tighten them back down.

Under no secomstances should you drain any fluid from the trans and then attempt to drive it until you refill it. You will fry the trans in seconds. Also, if you do have a drain plug on the converter and you manage to drain the trans make sure you start and fill it in neutral . And make sure you put at least four [5] quarts in BEFORE you try to start it. check your service manual [ you should own one] for the proper amount. since I don't know anything about your rig [no signature] I'm going to guess you don't have a drain plug on the converter. SOOOOOO, take it to a trans shop and have them flush it and change it. I don't want to sound like a messenger of doom here but one wrong move and you'll be spending a couple thou' for a new unit. good luck , and if in doubt, ask, that's what we are all here for.

I always disconnect the line going to the tran cooler stick a hose on it put the hose in a 5 gallon bucket, put tran in neutral, get fluid ready put funnel in fill tube, start engine. Forgot warm it up good. It will pump out 4 to 6 quarts when it starts sputtering start dumping in the new fluid knowing the capacity of the truck and looking at the fluid coming out shut off engine when you see the color change. I usually let it run for another 2 quarts after color change. put the line back on check fluid level. this is the only way I know of to drain a converter with out a plug. It's also quick and fairly clean although dumping a couple of syn quarts would hurt me a little.

Thanks guys. What I am about to do is just change over to Amsoil. Is there any thing I should do before I fill it like wash it out or what. They suggest a wash out in the engine but not in the trans. I like the idea of ,dasyure's but should I run it? I would take it to a shop around here but I want it done right. "Know what I mean?" Thanks for all the help. Dave, how do you like your new truck? Sure would of liked to had the other one! Anyway give me some more input!!

OK. the idea of using the pump to drain the converter is one way to do it , however that wont flush the converter because the cooling lines are routed in a different part of the valve body and do not go through the converter. you should be changing the filter anyway. as far as a good cleaning, find a local speed shop and locate some ' jones motor purr' carb or fuel injector cleaner and put that in the transmission about 50 miles befor you start any fluid changing. that stuff really works and it will treat all your lip seals and it will clean that little metal filter in the back for the overdrive that if it plugs up will requir a compleat teardown to change. Didn't know about that one did ya?? transmission shops love to never tell people about that little filter.

If it were my truck I would do the motor purr first [to clean] then find a shop that has done this type of thing befor and will garanty their work. also, have them clean your cooler too.

Good luck.
