What is the best way to fix the lift pump VP44 issue? Is there a pump that can be installed near the tank? Does it need to go in to the tank? Does it go with or bypass the lift pump on the engine? My truck is a quad cab one ton that has had an extra 4' added to the frame, so the tank is even further back than it was when it left the factory. I want to know the best way to fix this problem.

Get rid of the carter lift pump. Go with one of several after market pumps.

Put a gauge on it too, if you don't have one.

Airdog and FASS are both quality systems that have a water separator and filter built-in and enough line to get there. using stock fiter with either is optional. as stated a pressure gauge is mandatory on a VP truck.

glacier diesel is a cheap pump that will do the same thing as the air dog and fass, and if the pump ever goes out you just replace this little pump on the others, you have to replace the whole thing.

I have yet to see a glacier pump that has a built-in filter/air separator. ;)

sorry they don't have the filters but it will put out the same fuel that those will for cheaper, a lot of people don't want the filters either. I'm damn impressed with them and they are a great replacement for anybody that wants either a stock replacement or for massive amounts of power.

There's several good options out there depending on what you want to do with your truck.

For a stock type replacement, the Airtex is a popular setup. It can mounted in the stock location or used in a complete relocation kit. This includes a prefilter, harness, bracket and pump.

The next step up is the pump only. Pureflow has a Raptor and FASS also has a pump only option. Both come with replacement lines to relocate the pump, brackets and harness. These would retain the use of the stock filter canister, water in fuel light and heater. Lifetime warranty.

Then you get to the full systems. These are the AirDog and FASS systems with the filters. Again, all the lines, brackets, and harness is included. They can be use with or without the factory filter canister in place, but are shipped to basically plumb around it. Again, lifetime warranty.

The AirDog and Fass have differences in overall size, filters and line sizes.

Some of the full systems ship with a draw tube, but I recommend one when considering a fuel system upgrade.

To me, I recommend the Raptor and FASS (filterless) as a basic starting point for a reliable upgrade. Both have the warranty if you plan on keeping your truck. And both are proven. If you want more, it only takes money.

new to this, I have a 2002 3500 4wheel

drive 1 ton 150,000 miles with straight

pipe the only mod. I changed out the stock lift pump @ 80,000 miles. I need a little more power/torque pulling a fifth

wheel toy hauler weighing total 15,000#

I welcome any suggestions

Again, depends on what you are going to do with the truck.

Auto or stick? Are you planning trans upgrades? What does your budget allow for?

Good starting point for fuel system is the Raptor or Fass. This would be a pump with no filters, but still a full kit.

And really, gauges should be the first mod.

For power adders, you have a list. You could go with a mild plug in box. Edge EZ, Quad, Smarty, ect. These are good for about 65HP. Then you have the wire tapping boxes. Edge Comp, Quad Adrenaline, FMS, Redline. And finally, you could do just injectors or mix injectors into any part of this.

A mild box upgrade does not usually require any additional mods. But at some point, you need more air. That means a better turbo or if you go far enough, turbos. Same thing with injectors.

If you have an auto, it's only going to take so much before it gives up. Mine went at 20K with only an EZ. Stick shift trucks can use slipping as a guide, but a good South Bend clutch is still no cheap date.

So, choose your mods wisely. Make sure that you are willing to take the next step in the list of mods if it becomes necessary.

My truck is totally different than the most here in that it does not eat stock L. P's. I relocated the stock L. P to the frame rail and have had zero issues with it. When I relocated it I also got rid of all banjos and went with AN fittings and 3/8 line all the way to the VP44. With the stock pump I get 13lbs at idle and never below 8lbs at W. O. T. So far I have 225,000 miles and only 3 L. P's. Actually it's been 2 but I replaced one after a gelling issue just to be safe.

change out the HY for an HX35 with a boost elbow and box of your choice. :)

thanks for all the imput. I did replace the clutch with a small upgrade of hd con material. ( 6 speed). If I replace the lift pump with the raptor or fass do I retain the stock filter or what? and i'm not sure what guages I need or what the HY is. thanks for everything.

there are a lot of lift pumps avail that use the stock filtering AND fass/airdog models that have their own. :)

HY is the type of holset turbo you have stock on an '02. it has a small wheel/housing. it will spool fast but doesnt push much air. the HX35 is slightly bigger spools near as fast and cools well for a near stock truck to around 325hp. ;) the boost elbow simply allows you to restrict the pressure to the wastegate and thus raise boost to 35psi which is what you want for the HX.

The HO 6 speeds have an HX and will produce less restriction and more boost. He will need a boost elbow and elctronics/injectors to pump her up though.

SHobbs,

I'm getting used to sounding stupid but what are AN fittings? I'm going to be installing a Vulcan lift pump until I can get the shop space and time to drop the tank and install a FASS.
