Aftermarket alarms never seem to work well as a deterrent. (at least in Houston)

I just want a good kill switch that will either disable the starter, cpu or fuel pump.

What is the easest to do, that is effective and hard to find (or at least a major slow down)?

Thanks

Oh... its an "03" 2500

If you have a manual transmission, you can put a kill switch in series with the clutch starter switch. I understand that the autos have a jumper wire in place of the switch, so you should be able to do the same thing with an auto.

Yep.....

the jumper wire makes the ecm think the clutch is depressed all the time, with it out/open, it will not crank thinking your clutch is still engaged... i have that on my truck [6speed] but if the jumper is on the automatic trucks, that is the easiest way. next easiest way would be to kill the starter solenoid power...

You sure are right about Houston. My son-in-law just had his 6 month old 04' King Ranch Ford diesel stolen at the Rodeo. They did find it stripped of course.

Hey Nick,

Where could I find detailed instructions with some pictures on how to install the aforementioned wire. You see, I'm a little... err... mechanically/electrically challenged and don't want to set off the air bags or photocotocide or something. It sounds pretty simple, but I may fry something if I don't have instructions.

Thanks,

Craig

i have had some pics of this install in my sig gallery but i had them locked as it showed my hidden switch location... i just deleted the hidden switch pictures, but it still shows the clutch mounted switch and some of the wiring... them pics should be updated and showing at like 0900 this morning...

pics are up now. click this link for them

security

My truck (96) was stolen in Dallas on feb 15th of this year in a very well lit nice part of town. The thieves used it to transport foreign exchange students (illegals) across the border. They found it in Laredo, 3 weeks, an extra 4. 5K miles, and $5k worth of damage later. Since then I've read about why cars/trucks are stolen. Mostly its for parts or they have an order. Go to www.powerlock.com they have some interesting data on how cars are stolen and how easy it is for a real pro to be driving your rig in less than 40 seconds. Basically 90% of vehicle thefts are hot wired, the other 10% are towed (from powerlock.com) What they say makes sense - if you cant start it you cant steal it. The best approach is whats called layered security. Layers upon layers of devices that consumes a thiefs precious time. I have all windows etched, Internal Theft System from Dodge, Key Sentry from Dodge, and I will install the powerlock system in about 2 months. Powerlock guarantees that your car will not be hot wired or they will pay your insurance deductible. Criminals can hack immobilizers, defeat alarms, cut through steering wheel brackets, and even replace your ECM. There was even a story in the Dallas paper about someone who got a replacement key for a vehicle that was located in a mall from the dealer, then went and stole it!

disabler

STEALTH makes a disabler that utilizes a replacement starter relay and a fob device w/ rolling code, works great and installs w no wires, etc. 1-888-734-5483, they can direct you to a dealer in you area

I was looking at the stealth disabler and it looks like it disables teh starte rely. starter can be jumped or hotwired still I suppose; Does anyone know about disabling the cpu or the common rail controls. That should would seem insurmountable except for a tow job

You can not shift an automatic unless you press the break first. There would be an easy way to tap into that cable and put a kill switch in between.

What I used to do with my 2nd gen manual was, I used the cigaret lighter (I don't smoke) as a kill switch. If the lighter was not pressed in, the truck would not start.

if you don't mind throwing codes if you forget about the switch being active, you could install a switch inline with the cam position sensor. . without the ecm sensing it engine won't start

good ideas thanks; for that matter I suppose you could even interrupt the crank position sensor

get a DPDT switch and kill the crank & cam at the same time if you are going that route?

Where is the wire located, and what color is it? I would like to install a kill switch on my 2004 4x4, auto. Thanks

Question about trucks that use ignition keys with chips (like mine): Unless a thief has a correct key-and-chip made, how do they bypass the ignition system and start the truck, if they can? Aren't they reduced to towing it or finding another truck to steal?
