I have the 354 ls rear that has some play in it. I'm thinking about stepping up to a taller gear. Nothing crazy, but would a 392-410 help much with better pulling ability? I know it will not be cheap, $$ is not an issue fuel is not too much of an issue either. Any down side to going this hight and would it be worthwhile ? When I say I have play I actually mean quite a bit of play like 20 degrees before the rear starts moving OR is this normal? Thanks, Mike

I had a 4:10 in my GMC diesel. The engine was revving way too high on the highway. Had great jump out of the hole though.

I have a 1990, 4x4, 4. 10 gears since new, and I would never go back. In fact if I got a new one, I would still get 4. 10s. It pulls trailer just fine, and I drove it 25 miles to work (one way when I was in California). Truck has 128K now, still getting 20mpg.

Mike,
If you aren't pulling a huge load the 3. 54 is great. I gross 15K lbs. and am in the mountains most of the time and my 3. 54 is fine. If I were pulling much more I would prefer 4. 10 to put the gears closer together. From watching all the threads it sounds like the 3. 54 gets about 2mpg better than the 4. 10. I have gotten nearly 24mpg with mine. Craig

My truck & flatbed trailer weight is 14,900 Lbs with 135 gal of fuel. Add another 350 lb for chains, binders etc. I'm legal up to 36,000 lbs. My last run I was maxed out @ 35,999 Lbs. my dispatcher would really like me to run coast to coast. So this is why I was asking about the 4:10 gearing. Thanks for the comments/advice. Regards, Mike

Here's an idea. Since you are running a real Dana 60 up front look into the 3. 73:1 ratio. It's kind of like having your cake and eating it too. Do the math RPM= [(gear ratio X MPH) / rolling radius] X 168. Rolling radius is the distance from the ground to the center of the wheel. Remeber this will give RPM's for direct drive. Take what you get and multiply by what ever percentage of your overdrive. 4. 10 may limit your max speed, but then again at 36K I don't imagine you are setting any land speed records. Something to think about.

BIGGER IS BETTER!! MO POWER

Hey Guys, Got to thinking about this, remeber this is just MY opinion, if your rear end is wasted how do you think it got that way? 36K is way to much of a load for that Dana 80 (or worse yet didn't the early trucks have 70's??) Again just my . 02 but I didn't see a gear splitter in your sig. Here's a suggestion, although it's not inexpensive, look into a two-speed rear axle. Eaton and Rockwell make some really good, BIG assemblies. Look under 2 1/2 ton rated trucks. With this setup you could have the best of both worlds. Something in the 4. 56 or so range for when you are loaded that heavy, and something in the 3. 54 range when you are empty. Just a thought, but honestly 36K on a truck rated for less than 20K.

Thanks. That gives me something to look into. As it would be nice to get into the dual gearing. It has some life left in it. But by Sept/Oct the rear will be toast for sure. Thanks again. Mike
