Beware of this dealership! Updated!

I am contacting you to inform you of my recent experience in one of your dealerships that supposedly has a 5 star rating. I am in the market for a new dodge truck and wanted to trade my 99 dodge ram diesel in to help pay for it. After learning that my truck has no value for a trade in because it has 183k on her I decided to sell her myself. I sold her on ebay and got double what any dealer was willing to give. I have owned many Chrysler and Dodge vehicles and choosing anything other than a Dodge wasn’t an option. I wanted a new (06) ram 2500 diesel ext cab short bed with a very specific package. I returned to my dealership that I purchased (and still own) a Sebring convertible from, Branhaven Chrysler Dodge in Branford CT. My sales rep. Matt was very helpful and informative but did not have the truck that I was looking for in stock. I was left with the option to just order the truck the way I wanted it and I would have to wait the 2-3 months for it to come in. I, after just selling my truck, didn’t have the luxury of time. So he searched around to find another dealership that may have what I'm looking for but with no luck. I did my own hunting as well. I made my way 260 miles north to Allen Mello Dodge in New Hampshire and looked at their trucks however we couldn’t find the right truck. Some had too little, some had too much. On the return trip home I stopped at Roberts Dodge in Meriden CT to check their inventory. I was greeted by Dom D'Amato and informed him of my dilemma. He said he just sold the last diesel yesterday and didn’t have anymore but would check his computer to see what’s coming in. While he was doing that I wandered outside and looked over the parking lot and found an 05 diesel. I informed him of the 05 and we went for a test ride. They were asking $36,900 for the truck which was too much for a used truck with 8k miles. I offered $34k and was told it had to be $36. 9k. so I told Dom that I could get a new truck for that amount and would rather get a new one. I thanked him for his time and left. I continued searching for a new or leftover truck with no luck. I came across an add on AutoTrader.com for a truck that looked just like and was the very same 05 at Roberts Dodge but was selling for $34,900! This was just 2 days later! I returned to Roberts to reoffer the $34k price and Dom had no idea that the trucks price had dropped at all. He told me he couldn’t do the $34k but would still keep an eye out for an 06 for me. The next day Dom called me to let me know he had my truck there and to come up and see it. I went and looked at the truck and it seemed to be exactly what I wanted with only minor things missing. Upon inspection of the vehicle, which was completely new, I discovered a big grease mark on the underside of the folding rear seat. Dom didn’t understand how that got there but it would be taken care of. I test drove and liked the truck. Dom gave me the price of the truck and I accepted it under certain terms. Clearance lights on the cab needed to be added along with a block heater cord. I also wanted mud flaps, rear wheel liners, sprayed in bed liner, and 1 more key. This was discussed on Saturday Feb. 11th. On Monday the 13th he hadn’t had a chance to find out anymore info as to my request. On Tuesday I spoke to Lester the sales manager about my requests and we had an agreement on price and time the truck would be ready which was supposed to be on Thursday the 17th. On Wednesday the 16th I dropped off my loan application and checked with Lester the sales manager to see if we were still on track to pick the truck up the next day and he confirmed that it was going to be ready. On Thursday I called to Roberts to check on the time to pick the truck and couldn’t talk to anyone who knew what was going on with it. My sales man Dom was off and the sales manager Lester wasn’t around so I left a message to have him call me back. I waited 3 hours with no call back so again I called to find that now Dom was working and didn’t have the day off. Dom informed me that they hadn’t finished my truck yet and they needed to send it to have the bed liner sprayed in on Friday morning. I was not impressed at this point with the lack of progress with my truck but had no choice but to wait for them to finish. On Friday morning I went to Roberts to see if I could finalize my paperwork and again check on progress. To my utmost surprise my truck had not only not been sent to have the liner done, it had never been touched at all! Nothing had been done the entire week! I have been using my wife’s truck to get around while my new truck was sitting all week long in the same spot. I was told again not to worry and the truck would be ready today. The truck was then delivered to the liner shop for the install. I went to the same shop to talk about aftermarket accessories like nerf bars and tool boxes. The truck was finished while I was at the shop and the shop owner called to Roberts to let them know the truck was finished. This was at 12:15 pm. I left and ran some errands. I returned to Roberts around 3:45pm. I spoke to Dom and was informed that he had just got the truck back and "not to worry you'll have it by Monday". MONDAY?!?!?! Four days after I was supposed to have it! I told Dom that if they where planning on getting my truck done for Monday then he could just keep it and give my deposit back. His reply was " Well what do you expect me to do?" I asked him why hadn’t the truck been worked on during the week? Why did it sit there with no one doing anything to it? Why does he think that its ok to keep making promises that he has no intention on upholding? All of which he had no answers to. It was at this point that my search for my truck would have to start again because there was no way I was buying from this dealership. I have never been treated so unprofessionally by anyone ever. I bit my tongue throughout this ordeal to the point that I almost bit it off. This is a 5 star dealership? No way! Branhaven Dodge IS a 5 star dealership and deservers it but this place is an embarrassment to wear the Dodge name. In my opinion this dealership is a 2 star on a good day and today is not a good day. I immediately placed a call to the owner of Branhaven Dodge and told John what happened. I went directly to his dealership and spoke to him about having my truck transferred in from Roberts. This is where my story ends for now. I am meeting with John from Branhaven tomorrow to see what we can do. I hope this does not fall on deaf ears. I am willing to speak to anyone from Chrysler about this matter. I would also like to see some sort of action taken to make sure Roberts dodge does not treat anyone else in this manner. I can be reached at the phone number listed above. Thanks for your time, JD.

Never trust salesman...

Things I've learned:

Drive to where the truck is you want, transferring is rarely beneficial because the salesman make you feel like they are just going way out of their way to do it.

Take the truck for what it is. If you start trying to add things right off the bat you are just asking for trouble.

Never expect to be treated as a top priority after you've given them any money.

I once traded in an Eclipse, got rear-ended on the way to the dealership. Dealer said "Too bad, get it fixed and bring it back so we can do the deal. "

I said, "OK, then give me back my deposit. "

As I was walking out to the parking lot they came running out begging me to wait. Instead they took care of having insurance fix the repairs (someone else's fault) and we did the deal.

They could have offered that off the bat, but they had my money, so why should they? They're all crooks.

You did the right thing by walking. If it were me, I wouldn't even want your dealership to trade with that place.

It has been my experience in buying vehicles that some salesmen will size you up in terms of how bad they think you want the truck. If you give them the slightest hint that you need to buy in a hurry or that you are overly excited, anything along those lines then they will put the ball in your court. They will not do anything that you ask because they have made up their mind that you are gonna buy no matter what and they are not going to make the deal any sweeter for you if they think you will buy anyway. Sad thing is that most of the time they are right. IMO, anytime you show up at a dealership out of town they know they have the upper hand on you. They know you came there for a reason and that you are probably serious about buying from them or you wouldn't have driven all that way. The further you drive, the better it looks for them.

I say this because I learned the hard way myself. I found a motorcycle on the net that was 200 miles away in a different state. I called them and we made a verbal agreement over the phone. When I got there, they took one look out in the parking lot and saw my trailer behind my truck. . They changed the deal needless to say. I felt like a total idiot after I realized that I had showed my hand to a dealership too early and you NEVER want to do that...

Good luck with your search.

Patience????? Sir, you did a good job. I would not have waited ONE more day. You tell me a day, it better be done that day. (Even if you add Items to it. ) If they wanted your money, they would have been done when they FIRST said they would.

I wish you where closer to Indianapolis, In. because I went through almost the same thing. The first two dealerships I went to talked to me like I was in second grade. I was even laughed at. The third dealership I went to performed Flawless. Added what I wanted, washed and my truck was ready before I was done talking with my salesman!!!!!! Even worked with my Trade-in and financing. Done within one day.

When it comes to dealerships we all need to realize the nature of the business invites the opportunity to jerk people around. I went to buy a new vehicle back in 1992 and test drove and we sat down at the salesmans desk and I said how much. You are not going to believe this but I was told I had to put up a $500 deposit before he would tell me the price. I got up and left. To this day I have not been able to understand what was wrong with that dealer. The next dealer I offered invoice price (according to Consumers Union) and they accepted my offer. I understand the frustration and almost would say all dealers are crooks but I have dealt with a few that were on the up and up. I can handle a salesman but what really grips me is the parts departments charging 3 times what you can buy for elsewhere. Chrysler will lie to you. I ordered a 98. 5 24 v and waited 6 weeks past the delivery date before I took the one I have off the lot a 98 12 v. During that 6 weeks I called 800 for a dodge every other day and got a different answer almost every time. A friend called someone he knew and they in turn called someone he knew at Chrysler and got the straight story. My truck was in St Louis (it was built there) waiting for the computer problems to worked out. Chrysler or Dodge would never have admited that. Why should they. We are nothing but a bunch of ignorant dummies. Does not take long to figure out that at a dealers shop they think the same thing. I now have my standard policy. Once I buy a new vehicle it never goes back to the dealer no matter what. I take it to people I know and pay for it and save myself the frustration. I honestly believe the dealer repair shops fix the problem and while they are at it make sure something else will need attention in short order. I always say if I break down in front of a dealer I will hire Tow truck to haul me to an independent that I know and knows me. If I am miles from home I will do some detective work and then decide where to take it and it damn sure won't be a dealer. As far as I am concerned dealers have dug their own grave except for a select few, damn few.

Most salesmen can promise anything and deliver little because they do not have the authority to promise.

A little off topic but close.

A local Toyota dealer had a hybrid we wanted to test drive.

Floor boy insisted on a $500 dollar check- down payment he called it- for us to test drive it. I corrected him by calling it a security deposit. He laughed and said you will not get the money back unles you buy THIS car.

WE walked. Still don't have one.

One little added piece is that my 99 took me a half a year and 150+ trucks at dealerships and on the net before I found her. I had to fly from CT to MI to get her. I also had purchased a Asto van in St Louis and again flew there to get it. I had a Harley dealership literally at the end of my street prior to me moving and I wouldnt go in there to get a quart of oil because the service was so bad. This dealership that had my truck knew right from the start that I wasnt taking any crap from anyone because I flat out told them I have no problem jumping on a plane and going across the country to get my truck. They KNEW I wasnt the type to push around and they still did this. The sad part is I love my other dealer but they couldnt find this truck any where because Roberts Dodge hasnt properly checked that truck into their computers the right way so other dealers dont know its there. When the deal went south my good dealer still couldnt find my truck there. If Roberts had done just about anything correctly then my good dealer would have found this truck last week and had it shipped in and I would have never stepped foot in that hell hole. We're only talking a distance of 20 miles. They would have just gone and drove it back. I love Branhaven and they deserve to sell this truck to me. Hell they gave me a new 06 for an entire day to play with while I made my mind up on what options I wanted... ..... Who does that? I will let you guys know what happends today. . Keep em crossed!

WOW my dealer must be a 10 star if that is how a 5 star dealer works.

I bought my truck at 500 under cost. he said he would make it up on the hold back amt.

All warrenty repairs no hassle, always has sandwiches at lunch time for the service customers free loaner cars ect. Oo.

After getting burned on my first new vehicle purchase (87 D50), I learned that I was stupid. Not now. With the advent of the internet, AAA, and other places, you can walk into a dealer, tell them what YOU are willing to pay, and see what they do. When they start the "do you have a trade or are you paying cash", I tell them I haven't decided, it will depend on the FINAL cost of the truck, then I will negotiate the other stuff. It's BS to waste everyone's time trying to figure out how much a truck costs. When I buy pretty much anything else in the world, it is what it is. And when the dealer knows you've been hunting around, are not in a hurry, etc. , then the ball is in your court. Buying trucks sucks, even with a good dealer!

I say price without a trade-In then

after they give me a straight out price and after a joy ride In there truck I always ask Is there any way you can do better on the price? Then I say I got to talk this over with my wife. Then I go back to dealer and haggle some more by saying you got to do better. When he about ready to blow his top I ask now If I was going to trade my old truck what It worth. Now the salesman looks like he about ready to have a stroke. Never say what you will pay, that the end. I like to mess with there mind. Practice on buying a car or truck that In no way In he*# you would buy. Make them put everything on paper just In case you want to go shopping at a other dealer, that fun also. :-laf

Every time I've had a dealer install an option it's been a disaster. If I cant get it from the factory as a factory option I install it myself.

Also a friend of mine a car salesman once told me that he will never give you the true correct price if he thinks you are price shopping. If he did you would not be back.

So he always lowballed and let his sales ability correct it later.

So,,,, we were friends but I never bought form him. .

I dont know how much value it really is but I alwyas know the invoice price as found on edmunds and then find out about rebates. . Then we talk.

I have never bought a vehicle off the lot. I order them zacly like i want em.

I just had a salesperson at Dave Smith do something similar.

We worked through the option list for ordering a new truck, and she gave me a verbal price. I asked for a quote on that truck in writing and she refused. She said they wouldn't put a quote in writing until after I commit to buy.

Then came up with a tale of lawsuits from other dealers over their pricing.

Who signs their name to a blank piece of paper!

Disappointing.

I plan to talk to a manager there, but who knows if they care.

TurboFan, I have had the same happen at DSM, I felt uneasy also. I tried a couple other dealers and they where willing to give me qoutes. Under DSM's pricing to boot. Check with Adam Macomber at Dishman, he treated me good. One of the best experiances of buying I ever had. I am not afilliated with Dishman at all, I am just amazed at the ease of the deal there and would like to pass it on. I think most of the dealers in the NW will deal with you, from what I have heard.
