I am trying to decide which tires to put on my 04. 5 Ram, 315/70/17 BFG All-Terrain's or 305/70/17 Goodyear MTR’s. I have used BFG All-Terrains for the last few years and have been very pleased, especially with the winter grip. However I like the looks of the Goodyear MTR’s and I am tempted to try them out. Has any body out there used both tires? I am interested on the winter performance of the MTR’s and how they stack up to the BFG’s.

I have used both BFG AT's and Goodyear MTR's extensively and both are excellent tires. In my experience the winter traction was about the same for both with the BFG's having a slight edge. The primary differences were tire wear and road noise. The BFG's wear very well and are relatively quiet compared to the MTR's (although the MTR's were not obnoxious by any means). The MTR's wear pretty well also however I would expect to get about 1/2 to 2/3 the miles of the BFG's. The MTR's require more preventative maintainence as they are more aggresive and cup more easily. I would recommend rotating the MTR's twice as much as the BFG's. The MTR's are far superior on dirt or gravel roads (as you might expect). You really cant go wrong with either tire.

Yeah But you forgot price!!!!!! I can get 315/70/17 BFG for 120 a tire at SAM's Club. The cheapest I can find the Goodyears is 225 a tire

I'm going through the same decision making right now too (see thread "new tires". The cost is definitely a concern, but how about rub? I have the diamond plate running boards and mud flaps. The guy at the tire store said he would suggest the Goodyear because they definitely wouldn't rub. Any thoughts?

One of these days I have to post some pics.

I really like the MT/Rs because when it get's really nasty around here the deep lugs are better IMO. They do not make much noise at all for a mud tire, although they can be troublesome to balance.

I had a set of 37x12. 50x17 MTR's on my '04. The "road noise" was kindof LOUD! You definately will hear them. They are an awesome all-around tire-mud, snow, or sand. They air down nice and helped me whoop on everbody @ the Moses Lake Dunes when we would drag race up hill. I currently have BFG A/T 315/70R/17 they have no road noise and are exceptional in sand and snow. If you are an all-around driver the MTR's are the better choice hands down, but if you tend to do a lot of "pavement pounding" go w/ the BFG A/T's. Either choice you won't be disappointed.

"Goodyear MTR - one of my favorites. Will get square spots on cold mornings, but not as bad as the "Baja T/A. " Tough, tough sidewall - I mean, when they're off the rim, the sidewall feels about an inch thick! Not a kind street ride. Not terrible, just not supple over the little bumps. This is a burly off-road tire, made for serious, high speed (or low speed) work - I've got 65,000 hard miles (two sets - at least 40k off-road) of experience with this tire and I've never had a flat! Surprisingly quiet for how aggressive the tread pattern is. They tend to get noisier as they wear down. Don't know why. After serious hammering over lava rocks, sand, gravel, you name it - they hold together - the tread doesn't "chunk" off and the insides still look new. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO DAMAGE THESE TIRES IN ANY WAY. Also, they work really well in sand - hard to understand because the shape of the tire's tread would lead one to believe that they would dig trenches everywhere - but they don't. I think others who have used this tire will corroborate our findings. It's a great one. 30 psi works well for street and dirt. Any more pressure and freeway expansion joints will send sine waves through the sidewall that could kill your cat. Probably the best realistic off-road tire for the heavy trucks you guys have. Outperforms all the BFG's hands down - including the elusive "Projects. "

I have researched the heck out of this... all over the internet.

What I have found is that the MTR's are the first Goodyear tire in years that I would consider buying. I believe the BFG will last longer for most people. The MTR will require more frequent rotations to get good miles out of them, hopefully 30-40K.

Go to www.pavementsucks.com if you want to read more reviews of the MTR's. It seems that most people love them. You can also check out the feedback/reviews at www.tirerack.com, overall they are loved there too.

With all that being said... my next set of tires will probably be a set of MTR's... that is... if I don't change my mind before then... :D

I USE MT/R

I have LT275/70R17 (LR D) with approx. 26,500 miles, about half tread left. I run about 27,000 miles per year, mostly commuting to work. I use the truck to pull gooseneck livestock and flatbed trailers. The traction is excellent. I rotate 6-8000 miles.

Hey Blake,

What size lift did you use to clear the 37" MTRs? I was planning to use 4. 5" - 5" lift and reuse the stock rims. Dod you have any rubbing issues at all when flexing or turning? Do you have fender flares?

I have had GoodYear's on 2 of my previous trucks and my fiancee's Jeep. I replaced all of them with BFG's. I like the ride, noise and wear much better. Not sure if you know that BFG was bought by Michelin a few years ago. I got BFG's on the new truck from the factory and love them.

just my 2 pennies worth

Your comparison seems short sided? If you are going to compare a tire to the Goodyear MTR's then shouldn't the BFG MT be considered and not the AT?

Any how, I like the look of the Goodyear's, and they are a good tire. But I would chose the BFG MT's, they are quieter of the road, have a harder rubber and will give you 45-50k miles wear, and cost less. If it is a looks only thing, I think the MTR's look better. I have chosen the BFG's for two trucks I have.

6 2 carl- The 315's will definitely rub without a level kit or new springs. BFG makes a 285/70/17 --- but they are pricey. I put 33/12. 50/17 Mickey Thompsons MTX on my truck and they ride nice and look nice. However they are a soft tire and probably will only see 25-30K miles.

Why do you say the bfg 315's 'definitely will rub... mine don;t. NO level kit and I have stock springs.

Each truck is a little different ... some rub... some don;t. You won;t really know for sure until they are mounted.

I disagree with the mud and sand aspect of the MTR... I have not seen it perform well in either. The BFG AT is not good for mud either but will handle snow and sand VERY well and will outlast the MTR on the road hands down.

With that said the MTR is technically NOT a mud tire... it is more of a rock-crawler radial tire. "Maximum Traction Re-enforced" . . doesn't say anything about MUD and if you look at the rock crawling circuits MANY of the rigs are running the MTR's.

Most folks running them in my area on their jeeps are not getting more than 30K miles out of them and many MUCH less... and of course in FL there's not too many rocks... so the BFG in AT is the tire of choice for street and mild to moderate offroading. . the BFG MT while it may not have quite the sidewall strength of the MTR is in my opinion the BEST all around on/offroad tire for street longevity combined with offroad performance.

Someone mentioned interco (super swampers). These are great tires but are more suited for offroad and will not hold up very well on the street because the tread compound is too soft... even the 'radial' lines don;t compare to the other radial tire choices for mileage.

tires

The BFG mud terr. are not any quieter than the MTRs. I have run

all three on my vehicles or my siblings vehicles. I had the MTR's on my Jeep and was very impressed with how quiet they where. The MTR's also did not seam to loose grip as easily as the BFG mud terrains.

My brother has the BFG all terrains and they have been excellent

tires. If you want a quiet mud tire go with the MTRs. The other

suggestion was Interco tires and I had these on my jeep also befor switching to the MTRs. The models of Interco I have run include the SSR and the Swamper radial both offer little traction

on wet roads and not to mention are near impossible to balance. All of the tires mentioned except for the SSR's where run on light jeeps. The SSR's I had on my 97 Dodge 1500. For a good price on these tires check Tirerack.com or 4x4groupbuy.com and good luck!

Thanks for all the input guys. I guess my decision will come down to price. If I can find the MTR's at a price close to the BFG's I will try out the MTR's. Otherwise I will just stick with the tires I know work well, the BFG All Terrains.

I have a set of 305/75/17 buckshot maxxius mudders on my stock wheels. They do not seem to roar as bad as my cousins mtr's. I like them so far although I only have about 8000 miles on them so far. I plan on taking them off this spring and get aftermarket wheels and bfg's to run in the summer. They are also cheaper than mtr's and seem to go in mud about as good. It has snowed here yet so I can't say about snow or ice.
