BHAF is just a napa filter and a home made heat shield? am i getting this right? i mean i have no problem doing this as i have a lot of . 050 aluminum and i can make a couple of heat shields... . the filter i can find easily... .

am i missing something?

The Only thing you are going to want to buy is a outerwares prefilter for the paper element filter, they are water proof so if any rain splashes up it doesent ruin your filter, plus they are washable. If you haven't already done it ditch the 2 intake baffles and throw that silencer ring away. Sweet music to my ears.

I have a bunch of Outerwears covers on hand. Blue, Black, Red, and Purple. I think I have just under 30, so if ya need one, let me know. I sure like the BHAF/Outerwears/Heatshield setup.

I'm wondering about the two baffles. Do they really restrict the air flow?

I've already ditched the silencer ring.

i thought that the baffles and the silencer ring were one and the same...

still looking for a template for the third gens...

i have one that is for BHAF, but not sure if its a 3rd gen one or something else. maybe ill have to make it and then see if it fits... or make my own... .

Just curious, so this is basically ditching the stock box and mounting a bigger filter in front of the passenger side battery. Is the intake air now being pulled from the engine compartment alone or is there some ram air effect between radiator and headlight? I drive in dusty conditions a lot. How does this setup handle those conditions.

JCrocket-Looking through your pics-man, that bumper sure looks good and you really do some nice work. Why did you decide to do your intake like this? Bigger filter, more air movement for power/egt issues, and do you think a bent elbow piece instead of the sharp angle would be better. Honest Qs no knock intended.

The first mod to the 97 is going to be a BHAF, after the flatbed that is. I see some folks curl the filter up agin the firewall versus in front of the battery. Pros and cons to the locations???

Its battery position. On my 3rd gen the stock airbox is in front of the battery--so battery is closer to the cab. 2nd gen airbox is behind the battery. Battery is closer to front of truck. It is just ease of installation, in the available open space.

at first i had my air intake temp sensor just placed off to the side, but now it is in the piping [no difference between the 2 locations for power/fuel economy that i can notice]

where did you get that tube made? is it 4 inch on both ends? also that looks to be about a 90 degree bend, do you think that maybe an 80 to 85 degree bend would work better?

i see that it is just long enough to cover then bend and maybe an inch on each end for a straight section. it looks good.

i think ill have to start putting some kits together... . it will take a bit though.

3 90° fittings on my piping. 2x are rubber 90*° intake elbows [purchased locally, but avalable from air flow systems inc online] and 1 short radius 90° 4" exhaust elbow 4" OD both ends... and a short section of 4" to connect filter to first rubber elbow.

if you are going to retain the stock tubing, a less angle elbow would work better. i have a 75° degree exhaust elbow in the basement and that looked like it might have been a good fit, but i got that at the same time i got the rubber elbows and with how i had my filter positioned, the 3x 90°'s fit so nicely, i decided to keep them like that.

[my filter fits slightly inside the fender well as i have cut away the inner plastic fender from the battery tray all the way forward and removed one of the stock air box mounting tabs off the battery tray. ]

thanks for the info. im going to start pricing out some things and experimenting in the next couple of months... then it will be time to make some test kits... .

Nick, did you get the 4" exhaust elbow from air flow systems? do you think 3 rubber 90's would work?

I really like your setup, very clean, and I want to do something just like or similar to yours. What kind of insulation did you use?

Thanks,

Paul

P. S. where is the degree symbol on the keyboard

I got my bhaf intake tube from Greg at Desert Racing Concepts. It comes with all attachments from turbo to bhaf including IAT mounting bracket. Here's a pic of my setup.
