Installed the Fleetgarud BHAF this weekend and now my EGT's have increased between 50 - 100 F. WTF???? Before, I had the Amsoil oiled filter, but decided to give the BHAF a try since a lot of folks don't like the idea of an oiled filter.



I don't have anytype of heat shield installed so the filter is just sitting there where the old air box was.



Does anyone know if someone makes a heat sheild for these things? Will a heat shield help?



I figured that the air flow should be better with the BHAF and hence, lower EGT's, but I wonder if the heat under the hood is causing the problem. The old air box would get cool air from the fender ... so this must be the reason the old Amsoil filter ran cooler.



Is there anything that can be done to help the BHAF, or should I just reinstall the air box and clean up the old Amsoil filter?
 


My own experience is that an aftermarket oiled airbox filter will flow plenty of air for all but extremely modified engines. Drawing outside fresh air though the factory airbox sure is the easiest route to cooler air, anything else involves more time and money without a heck of a lot of gain.

I too installed the BHAF. I have not experienced the problem you have. I cannot tell any difference in EGT's.



I think I would re-install what you started with, and re-install the BHAF, checking the EGT's on the same day, same road and same direction of travel. I am convinced that there are so many variables, that a 50 to 100 degree change is hard to measure. I can push just a tad harder on the go pedal and radically change my EGT's.

BHAF should outflow an Amsoil

I also went from an Amsoil in the stock box to a Fleetgard BHAF. I ran Amsoil filters for over 100K. I knew exactly how hot I could get and how much black smoke I could make. The BHAF did in fact clean up the black smoke. Were before I could reach and hold 1500 degrees after the BHAF I could only get to about 1400 and then it defuel and dropped fast. I also lost ALL black smoke. I did have the heat sheild. This was all with the AH19037 or orginal BHAF.



I have since went from the AH19037, to the marine version AH19004. I picked this up from a thread on another site. Here is a clip from Fleetguard regarding this marine version filter (same exact external size): "The marine version of this assembly has metal mesh reinforcement on both sides of the media, and is structurally stronger both in the media, and at the joins. The filter media in the AH19004 is constructed of a woven polyfiber material that maintains the high level of effective filtration of the AH19037, but has a significantly higher flow rate. This material is also effective when wet. "



Here are the Fleetguard quoted flow rates for both:



AH19037: RATED FLOW 687 CFM

AH19004: RATED FLOW 918. 19 CFM



There are better flowing filters but as far as a paper filter this one is right up there. Up in this country a little under hood heat is good for all but 2 months per year anyway.

Well, one thing with my BHAF is that the black smoke has definitely NOT gone away. I guess the 370 injectors create a lot of heat real quick so its not to hard to see the EGT's shoot past 1000 by just goosing the go pedel a little up a hill at highway speeds.



I think I will reinstall the old air box and clean up the Amsoil filter for now, the work on a special heat shield and way to get cooler outside air to the BHAF.
 
I was worried about the same thing you are as far as under hood heat and EGT. I installed a thermometer probe on the BHAF at the closest point to the turbo and with normal driving being done there was a 15 deg rise in temp at the filter from outside temps. A short burst of full throttle like a drag race didnt make any difference in temps. A longer stretch of heavy throttle like towing up a grade would raise the temps maybe 40-50 deg but they would cool right off once you let off. This was before adding the heat shield.
 
Forrest ... as to your question, yes the 2nd battery is right next

to the filter.



As of this weekend, I removed the BHAF and put back in the air box and Amsoil filter. Temps are down 50-100.



When I have some time, I'll come up with some Aluminum sheld designe ... and maybe a way to direct cooler outside air to the

BHAF.



Untill then, the old air filter will remain installed.

During early R&D with the B-1 Bomber Turbos I tried several different filter setups. I had temp probes installed under hood, Before filter snouts or intakes, after filters but before turbo intakes, and after the turbos (Charge Air). Inshort what I found is no matter what Filter you run the most important feature is if the filter draws all of its air from outside of the engine compartment.



This is especially true when towing heavy. My testing was on 6 to 8% mountain grades and outside temp of 45-55 deg. GVW with trailer was about 20,000 lbs



I had always thought that it shouldn't matter that much were you draw air when traveling at high speeds since the air must be ramming fast thru the engine compartment.



When testing I was cruising at or above 70 mph and would see only about 20 deg's difference from the outside air and after the filter inlet with a BHAF style and 12 deg with the oem stock box with AFE filter. But Then when I would start pulling the grade and the radiator and intercooler temps starting climbing the under hood air and after the BHAF temps went up 50-75+ deg's.



If you take that and multiply it by 3 or 4 as it goes thru the turbo that makes 150 to 250+ deg increase in charge air temp. Even after the intercooler does its best the end result increase in charge air temp can change Egt's by 200 deg or more not to mention the difference in HP. A cummins engineer once said that for every 1 deg in cooler air entering the 5. 9 CTD it would make a 1. 4 deg difference in egt's. Look at the difference in the way your truck runs at night to the day time. Why give up any of what I consider free Cool Air HP.



This is also why a Hx40 will make more HP, Lower Egt's and decrease smoke levels at the same boost pressures as the hx35..... It is because of the lower Charge Air temp. The turbo is not moving more cfm thru the engine it is moving Denser air thru the engine at the same cfm.



The filter doesn't matter if it's high enough flow CFM but where the air comes from is a huge factor.



Ever notice that the one thing every auto / truck manufacturer do to every model of their cars and trucks since the early 60, 70's??



They all duct cool air from outside the engine compartments..... That's gotta mean something!!
