Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) BHAF Installed.....Wow!

I just installed my Napa 2790 BHAF. WOW! I am impressed with the sweet sound of the turbo whistle! Does anyone have a part number for a prefilter sock from Outerwears that will fit this application?





Also, should I use a heat shield? IF so, where can I buy one from.

I'm sorta interested in one of those too, but am a bit turned off by the ugliness of the raw filter just hanging out there in the open - I know there was a neat stainless cover of sorts available for a while, wonder if they're still available?

I may be headed in that direction myself. I just got my first analysis back today running the K&N RE-0880. Silicon was 28 I also killed my dowel pin on this same oil batch. I hope this high readng came from the high tack i used on the cover gasket. I will sample again next change and if silicon is high, goodbye K&N and hello BHAF

Just put about a 100 miles on the filter, but I like it.

The big advantage is the material doesn't absorb dirt. I just cleaned mine after 10K miles and the filter had minimal dust on it that I blew right off with the compressor. The filter cover was hardly dirty. There a pile under it though. I guess after shut down it just falls off. I rinsed it anyway and good to go again. They do fade though. I have one of the heat blankets and seems to work OK. There are heat shields that are cheaper though, do a search.

EDIT: I forgot to mention on this last cleaning the neck of the filter was starting to collapse from the pressure of the clamp. Not much but enough for me to re-enforce it with a small piece of 4" exhaust pipe.

It sits there snug. The extra length of pipe for my filter minder made it even tighter. Although it hardly rains down here I've been through some pretty deep wet stuff and washes etc. with no problems. Another benefit to the prefilter is it's kinda rubberized nylon. When washing it it repelled water fairly well. Enough to stop any inadvertent splash.

i need one too. on the way back from vacation towing my 5ver i pulled the filter minder to 30% used with a clean k&n and the stock air box! time for the big filter.

Do it! Looks awesome, sounds cool. I didn't have a guage before, but my stock 235HP engine with BHAF and 3" no muffler refuses to go over 1050F MAX EGT. (I needs more fuel!)



If you have a medical friend get some 6" orthopedic stockinette to go over the filter. It's dirt cheap. redneckdr and I use it.



What's the easy way to remove the air box studs? One of them is rubbing my filter the wrong way.



I have some open-cell foam wedged underneath it right now, but need to secure it a wee tad better.

I just removed the rubber grommets from the airbox and put them back on the studs. I've been over some REALLY rough stuff (enough to break my exhaust hangers) and haven't had a problem with wear on the filter.

With the Comp on my otherwise stock '02 HO, a stiff pull at full boost put the filter minder down 2/3 of the way...



And THAT was on a NEW stock paper filter - I'm afraid that volume of air thru a K&N would overpower it's filtering ability - and figure a physically LARGER filter is the only safe way to go...

I've run my truck through many deep water puddles (foot+ deep) and have never gotten water on it. When I was at the TDR Nationals I wanted to wash the truck but was too tired and lazy to do it myself. I pulled into one of those automatic car washes that just spray (no brushes) and bought the expensive wash (went over the truck like 8 times. Right after I pulled into it and the spray nozzles started up I remember the BHAF in there! There was a spray nozzle that sprayed horizontally DIRECTLY at the gap between the hood and the fender. It also had an underbody wash that sprayed straight up. I thought for sure the filter was going to get soaked and I was going to suck it in pulling out of the wash. I shut down RIGHT after I pulled out, popped the hood and to my surprise the filter was bone dry, not a drop of water on it. The only way it could get wet IMO is if you went through a water crossing that the water was 4 feet deep or so (and then you'd have more to worry about than just the filter) or possibly drift busting in winter (I put my stock airbox in during winter).

Just like Steve said about getting it wet: I even "drift bust" in the winter with mine in and have yet to get snow on it! Hard to believe but true.

22K miles on the filter now, and still looks new under the sock. generally change the sock with every other oil change.

also, one way of handling the studs is to put vacuum caps on them. i started with one that just fit the stud, then put two more on each stud, increasing the size each time.

also you should put some sort of protection on the metal A/C line by the firewall to keep the edge of the BHAF from chafing the line.

If you call outterwears and tell them that you need a cover for the BHAF (or give them the fleetguard #19037 I think) and that your from the TDR they will only have one questions... what color do you want.





I used the sock that redneckdr gave me for a while, and it worked good, I just wanted to get something a little more pleasing to the eyes... so I got a red cover like in the picture above.

as redneckdr says, to use some sort of protection for the ac line, i went to the local OSH and bought a 6' length of 1/2" foam water pipe

protector for cold winters. cut it to almost 2", wrapped around the a/c line, then cut about 1-1/2" sections and put just over the 3 bolts sticking up, on the 2 back bolts the filter is riding the small foam piecs i cut. i already called and ordered the prefiltered sock, red... .
