Was looking for some info on BHAF filters on AOL the other day and found a site that discussed some potential problems with some of the filters. Not all of them, just a couple.

It seems there has been a few cases where the filters got wet and disintegrated, got sucked into the turbo and engine. You can well imagine what kind of mess that could make! The filters in question did not have a inner screen to prevent this from happening.

Does anyone know if the fleetguard BHAF filter has a screen inside? If not, do the others that have been used, such as the Wix have it?

I'm not trying to start a war here, just want to get some info. I am going to install one of Smokey's setups and want to be sure about the filter. I don't recall ever seeing a filter come apart but sometimes "Murphy" is my copilot, so why take a chance!:D

Paccool,

No, the fleetguard BHAF does not have an inner liner. I have also seen discussions concerning the filter becoming wet, and being sucked into the engine. One idea was to find a filter with an inner liner. I believe there is a marine filter available with such a liner. I have no idea what the P/N is, or where to find one. But I don't think it would be too tough to find.

I did my best to design the "Old Smoky Mount" to keep the filter dry. I have looked at my filter after washing my rig, and it showed no signs of being wet. If there were any doubt, an Outerwears pre filter would shed any small amount of water that hit the filter. I bought the pre filter to extend the life of the BHAF, but was surprised when they said it would repel water. It keeps a lot of bugs and stuff from becoming lodged between the pleats. So, there are a couple of options.

Thanks Mike. Like I said, the chance of this happening is slim but I'll see what I can find. Still want to get the mount though.

Is the inner hole about the same size as the inner part of the filter? If it is, I could make a rolled screen and slip it in the filter. If I used SS screen, would last forever.

paccool, Fleetgaurd does make a BHAF with the inner screen P/N AH19004. Prepare for sticker shock when you call your local Cummins. I found the MHAF (8. 5" dia) w/inner screen P/N AH19002. I am currently running this one on my truck, although I haven't notice much, if any EGT drop over the stock air box and a Fleetgaurd filter. For the price of the MHAF w/inner screen you can buy 2 BHAF w/o inner screen. I decided to run with Outerwears prefilter "sock". They are water resistant. Hope this helps. You, me and Murphy. :D
