i am looking to get rid of my current k&N drop in filter with a BHAF. got to looking around and found a K&N FIPK intake system, are those any good? any info would be appreciated.

Iv been lookign around too. From what i have seen on here it seems more than a few people arnt happy with k&n and are changing to something else but lilke i said i have no exp with this.

IMO the ONLY Cotton/Gauze re-usable air filter to use is the AFE Pro-Guard 7. I had a K&N and a regular AFE filter and both let sand/dust through. This was by no means a scientific test. It's just what I saw.

There have been some negative reports about K&N on this web page. There are also some very satisfied users. I an oen of the latter.

I have the FIPK II (#57-1525). I like the hard plastic, smooth sided intake hose from the filter to the turbo. Gives smoother airflow. I also like the heat shield. Many report debris and lots of oil in the hose and intake of their turbo. I suspect over oiling or under cleaning. . Mine has been on for 20,000 miles and intake is spotless. The quality of my K&N is as good or better than any others I have seen.

K&N's customer service is excellent-I broke the securing nut off the small end of the filter (my fault) and could not figure out how to replace it. Called K&N, found it could not be replaced due to sealed filter - got now filter at no charge.

I'm over 400 hp and get all the air I need. I suspect those having problems are higher HP and working their trucks a lot harder than am I.

Real question, in my mind, is oiled vs non oiled filter-which is best. Have read nothing definitive either way; think the vote is still out on that one. I see no downside to oiled and can recommend the K&N.

Here's a thread I started about K&N's air "filters"; I think she'd have been better off without an air filter. You hold it up to the sky, and you can see sunlight through the danged thing. This is the 3rd one either Mom or I have had. Those of you who have gotten good service from K&N have been lucky. The picture is the inside of the intake hose. The plastic around the sealing areas was clean, which tells me it is coming THROUGH the filter, and not AROUND it. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=98426

Keep in mind, this is a 92 stock engine (160hp) with an 18cm housing as the only upgrade. I put my K&N in there, as it filtered slightly better than the one in there, but it still allows dirt through. Now, K&N wants me to go to the store I bought it from (in Colorado) and let them give the store a retrurn authorization. I hope their oil filters are better than their air filters, but I'm not taking any chances. I have a slightly used AF1141 a TDR member shipped me, and it seems to be doing ok. I like the feedback and reports of the ProGuard7, but still have a bitter taste in my mouth from the reuseable oiled filter thing. Think I'll stick to paper.

Chris,

I got my Fleetguard BHAF at IMSupplies, just down the street from the Cummins dealer in Harrisburg. Cummins didn’t have one, and said they couldn’t get one:confused: The total price I paid was $54. 79 and the part number was AH19037. It fit so perfect in my truck, I think Fleetguard almost made them for Dodge.

Do a BHAF search and you will have more info than you wanted. Heres one link https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93262&highlight=BHAF I started with the K&N factory replacement and then the Scotty1 then when the BHAF came around, went to the NAPA 2790. They may be good, I don't know but I don't have time to be cleaning no K&N. My best EGT results came with the BHAF. I ran one two years and replaced it with another last summer. The first one still looked okay but I replaced it figuring two years was about enough. The BHAF works for me.

thanks for all the info guys... i went ahead and purchased a AFE pro-guard 7. i will be sure to let all ya'll know what difference it made.

The turbo whistle you get from the oiled filter thrills some, but is deafening to me. The BHAF is pretty quiet considering it sits open in the engine compartment.

edit

corrected a statement and clarified my coment on aftermarket filters

Both the 8. 5" and 10. 5" will also fit the 3rd gens. I have the 8. 5 in right now because I knew it would fit with 45* mandrel bent elbow. Slam bam thank you mamm it was in, thaere is room for 10. 5 but will have to make a insulator for pos batt cable as there will be about 1" between wire mesh and cable.

I still have a couple 10. 5's left from my 2nd gen that will replace the exisiting 8. 5" one.

SEE readers rigs

I ran a 10. 5 for 80k mi on the 2nd gen after trying an AFE drop in that developed pin holes. NOT GOOD in the dusty desert. The turbo noise is less with the BHAF, than oiled or stock box paper, in previous and present truck. 2nd gen had DD2's, EZ and PDHX35 plus more.

Why mess with washing and oil when the paper is good for years and no muss no fuss drop in.
