A few guage question questions

Put in a BHAF and the SS Mallory Mount this weekend and I had just a few impressions that I wanted to share as well as ?s to ask:

1. If want good airflow but not a lot of turbo noise, go with the BHAF over the K&N RE-0880. The BHAF is much, much quieter than my old K&N. I like the turbo noise, so I wasn't happy about losing it.

If the noise is gone though, does that mean that my turbo is getting less air? I saw some CFM rates for a K&N vs. BHAF on here a while ago, but I couldn't find them.

2. ) The Mallory Mount for the BHAF is about the worst accesory I've ever spend $$ on. It doesn't fit right, has rough edges and gives me the impression that it wasn't really field tested before put into production. Granted part of the install problem was the placement of my airtank for my airhorns, but the back of the mount cut a nice deep groove in the rubber seal between the cowl and the hood. I was happy to pull it out of my truck and put it back in the box.

I know alot of you guys like the BHAF and I'd be interested to see the flow #s if you can come with them vs. the K&N. The Mount is staying in the box though.

I've got a mount on the way. You have me a little concerned now. I guess I will wait and see, as many of the other members see to be happy with it

Ryan-

I might be the only one who had a bad experience but I just wanted to compare my impressions with other guys. I'd be interested to see what you think when you get yours.

I'm running a BHAF now, put it in when the K+N RE0880 needed a cleaning. Egt's were a bit lower with the BHAF when it was colder outside. Now that summer's here, egt's are the same in my truck as with the K+N in the Scotty air system.

I recently pulled the 17% grade in town, screaming in 5th gear with the PM3 set on 6. Egt's never topped 1100, pre-turbo. Ambient outside air was 85f, truck was unloaded. That's about the same results I saw with the K+N. Works for me, but I would still like to try the AFE mega cannon in the new Scotty 2 system, bet it performs even better.

Can't comment on the mount, don't have one. I do need the turbo shield though. The HX40 is way close to the BHAF. I popped the hood after the above mentioned run, BHAF was too hot to touch with a bare hand  .

I just got a fleetguard 19037 10 inch. And I am going to make my own mount and heat shield. From the looks of the other ones it doesn't look too hard, maybe I am young and foolish. But I am going to make mine out of some thick sheetmetal and put some brackets on it if it is too flimsy. I am also thinking of covering it with some automotive insulation, I don't know if it will help or not. Ultimately I want to find a good scoop with four mounting bolts and be able to place it over the filter and turn it around during the winter months and have a cowl induction, and ram air during the hot season.

Is this filter what they call a BHAF? And will it help my egts if I can get a good heat shield?

Thanks guys,

Shane

Thanks, I finally got the part numbers today by doing a search because they are never listed only as BHAF. I can't be the only one who didn't know, maybe I was. What does BHAF stand for? Big Honking Air Filter?

Shane

it is one of the few abbreviations i know and yes it is Big Honkin Air Filter. someone should post the abbreviations somewhere for the slow guys like me!:D

Not all BHAFs are equal

Not all BHAFs are created equal. The Fleetguard version outflows the Napa and Wix by a considerable margin. 600-ish cfm vs close to 900 for the Fleetguard (pulling numbers from my memory when there was a thread regarding this many moons ago)

I will repost this again. I installed a NAPA BHAF and also a H2O vacuum in. gauge. I couldn't move the gauge at all with 38 lb of boost. Then I blocked off over half the surface of the BHAF and did another run. It just barely moved the gauge needle. So I would think a new filter would deliver twice the air my engine could require.

Shane,

I built my own BHAF mount a couple of weeks ago and it works fine. I made mine out of Diamond Plate Alum. . 100" thick. I got the template from another thread. I also added a couple of extra air tubes connected to the cowl.

I will have a couple of pics in a few days.

Here's the BHAF mount I make, it fit real nice, no sharp or rough edges, covers the filter completely, side to side and wraps half way around, so you can still remove the filter, when it's time to change it, and it bolts right in. I've made a few for freinds, and they really like 'em, it was on display in Muncie but, if you didn't see it, here it is... ... ... ... ... . #ad

If your interested, PM me.

I was just at Lowes hardware and saw the diamond plate, thought it might make it look better. I was right yours looks pretty good. How do you hold the filter in place? Thanks for the pics. Do you have the link to the sight where you got your template from?

Shane

Shane,

I didn't get the template from any site, this is my own design. The fit is tight, no need additional filter hold downs.
