This is on an '07 with a 5. 9. These parts are all either homemade or generic parts made to work. Now that it is finished I am really happy with the way it turned out. For more pictures you can go to my BHAF album inside my photo gallery. I credit R Weiss for the idea on the vertical position of the filter as well as the plenum peice. You can read about his install on his thread titled "My Version 06 Mega BHAF.

Technical stuff

1. You'll notice that the air temperature sensor is spaced up a little. This was necessary because on the sensor shaft there is and o-ring and if you were to mount the sensor flush the o-ring would be inside instead of in the aluminum.

2. There is no room to spare with this set up. You'll notice the quarter cirle cut out of my mounting plate. This was necessary to get the filter as low as I could.

Other than that its all pretty straight forward. I've got a lot of time into this and hopefully if anyone else decides to go this route this thread will save them some time. :-laf

That's pretty cool. A couple questions...

How much turbo / intake whistle do you get over stock?

I wonder will you gain or lose power since it looks like you will be taking in a lot more warm underhood air rather than cooler air from the fender. Did you dyno?

The turbo actually remains pretty quiet even with the silencer ring out. It make less of a whistle and more of a spool noise.

I am a little concerned with air temps. I have read opinions from both sides and seen some tests. I don't dyno but I do plan on taking a trip and measuring the difference between outside air temp and the temp of the air around the filter.

Thanks for the comments

Cool Hose

One more filter set-up that the Cool Hose will work with. Thanks guys!

Keep experimenting! This is about the coolest, most innovative set-up that I have seen so far. Black, Blue and Red Cool Hoses are in-stock.

I understand the concerns people are having with not being shielded from heat. I'm am concerned myself and plan to fab one up in the future but the numbers don't lie. Driving through the mountains of Yellow Stone Park for almost 300 miles, hand calculated 24. 93 mpg :--) can't argue with that. Let me know what you think.

Looks great BWall

Bryan have you thought of doing a Cool Blue hose for the 2nd Gen to go from the airbox to the turbo? I've never cared for the ribbed design of the stocker, hard to clean and keep looking good. Dave Meheen let me fondle the first prototype Cool Blue hose he came up with :)

I was just poking around DPP website, what do you think of the S&B Cold Intake? What brand of filter element does it use? I'm also eyeing the cowl Cool Blue hose but the thought of cutting a big hole in my cowling scares me a bit ;)

PS sorry for hijacking your thread BWall

That is outstanding fuel economy for on '07. Not calling you a dreamer or anything but it is almost too high to believe! You must be doing something right.

nice write up ...

i got my cool blue hose with a tag and then sold the tag for more than i had in the combo ... so i got the hose and 20$ for "free"

how does the plenum seal to the filter?

2nd Gen Cool Hose etc.

Looks great BWall

We have been playing around with the 2nd Gen hose for quite a while. I have roughly 6 proto types that just didn't quite fit well enough to release to the public. I ended up collaborating with Pete Tomka at PSM Diesel to do the mold for it. Pete has the mold done and now we are just looking for a new mfg. We did get the Cool Hose for the 6. 7L done and they should begin shipping next week. I like the S&B. They make their own filters (and a lot of other peoples too). The one they use in there boxes is an 8 layer oiled filter. Berry and the gang at S&B take filtration seriously. They still believe that oiled filters are superior as long as they are cared for properly and they have the data to back up the claim. They send out an instructional dvd with each intake explaining the proper way to oil. To top it off they are reasonably priced.

Cutting the hole in the cowl for the PSM Cool Power can be a little daunting. Don't let that stop you they are very effective systems for the money.

My '98 Honda would have a hard time making those numbers. Maybe I should fab up a BHAF for it. Don't ever sell that truck.

The plenum meets the filter through a rubber grommet. Being honest it is a trucklite grommet cut up a bit but it fits just about perfect. There allthread from the top of the plenum to the bottom of the plate that the filter sits on. Check out my photo gallery under BHAF and it will give you a lil better idea.

Cool, thanks for the info Bryan :)

Been tracking my mileage on the weekly. 60mph at 6500 feet averaging 23. 5mpg. This is in Jackson Wyoming to give you an idea of air and fuel quality. Just picked up my Edge Insight. It will show me intake air temp. I'm going to start logging the difference between outside air temp and intake temps to verify the validity of a heat shield before I build one.

where in the world did you get a BHAF for 33 bucks? Every time I get a price for one at NAPA it is closer to 70.

What part number did you use?

PN 2790. Once a month, usually the second thurs and fri of each month Napa has a filter sale. Up to 70% off. I get oil filters for under $5 and fuel filters for $12.
