Here's a good question. Which is better: an AFE Pro Gaurd air filter or the BHAF.

Obviously the BHAF is monumentally cheaper and cheaper is good, but, which is better ?? I'm fixing to change because I need a great deal more air but am undecided on which way to go... . Anyone with any experience in this matter ??

Truthfully, I would go with the BHAF, I could not justify the cost of the AFE system, and unless I am mistaken, the flow rate is similar...

I`ll have to throw my 2c in here also... I went the BHAF route, because of cost, and the overall performance is close. I would also recommend a turbo heat shield from fostertruck.com and a prefilter from outerwears.com... .

other than that, good luck, happy b0mbin. .

I have the bhaf with recently installed turbo heat shield from LarryB. No complaints as of yet. Will be pulling some hills this weekend. Will let all know how the egt's range.

In the long run, the aFe is cheaper, depending on how long you keep it. I don't know what the new aFe costs, but at roughly $40 or so a piece for the BHAF, you'll pay for an aFe in what, 5 to 7 replacements of the BHAF? And you don't have to come up with a heat shield.

I've had an Amzoil filter in the box, a BHAF, an aFe (currently) and tested a friend's Scotty II (against my aFe on a hill with temperature probes etc. for comparison). My aFe is just fine. My only reason to change is if I find a filter that has enclosed housing and flows just as good that I can mate up to the air supply hole in the fender. I'm working on a ram-air system that uses the fender air supply. I may just build a housing around my aFe.

FWIW,

I have both a Scotty II and a BHAF. The Scotty uses a AFE and runs about 50* cooler than the BHAF when towing. I use the BHAF while I am cleaning the AFE. :cool: I am also using Larry's heat shield all the time.

I have run the AFE and the BHAF. I switched back to the AFe because it dropped the dgts about 50 degrees. Also the AFE seems to have a little quicker response. I don't have any stats to prove that just thats what my perception was. The BHAF is much better than the stocker though ;)

I really like my BHAF, but imagine the sinking feeling after popping the hood to find the BHAF has come loose from the intake tube sometime during the previous weeks 2000 mile road trip through sanded/salted winter roads. :{

Not a cheap error.

Make sure its secure.

Pulled some good hills this weekend with wife's wigwam in tow. Outside temps in the mid 90's, 1100 egts max with my foot in it. I think I can say the heat shield dropped them at least 50, if not 100 degrees. Thinking of going with one battery and moving the bhaf forward to the right battery position. Surely would get less engine heat. Or maybe I will just go with the shield for the bhaf. Decisions, decisions!
