Has anybody done actual airflow Testing on this filter or is it just a warm fuzzy feeling thing? Right now with brand new stock filter I can suck the filter minder down half way and I would like to get more not sure on oil type filters from what I've read they aren't that great

Joe did some testing years ago, Issue 37, page 26. I looked in the magazine archive section and couldn't find it.

There's more than one size BHAF, all with different CFM ratings too. I cant remember which one has the highest CFM but if you Google that question you should find the one you're looking for. That said, any of them should flow more air than the OEM filter.

I do not believe the stock one will effect anything but noise up to 400-450 HP. I ran one for awhile and went back to stock because of the noise. Just remove the boot to the fender and put some more holes on the bottom half of the box.

I did some digging into this a couple years ago. The BHAF part number you want is AH19037, don't go with the AH19002 which looks the same but flows less than stock (it's a Marine version).

Compared to the stock air filter it's not a huge improvement (note though that the stock air box itself has considerable restriction and drilling large holes in the lower section help quite a bit).

Here's some info I found when researching this a little, CFM ratings along with measured restriction (inches H2O):

Stock 2003 air box with filter is roughly 500cfm @6"

and these filters match the Fleetguard

Donaldson B105006 590@6" 680@8"
Wix 42790 680@8"
Napa 2790 680@8"
Fleetguard AH19037 590 @6" 680 @8"

Well I got one on the way a wix though cummins was a week away . Goina try to figure q away to install the minder

I drilled a hole the size of the grommet, in the end plate, inserted the grommet then pushed the gauge in. You get the results that your looking for if every thing is tight. Might have to soap up the end of the gauge to get it in.
I used the one that was in the original filter box. Geno's also has them, if you so desire.

Don't forget to order an OuterWears for it. And install a heat shield between the turbo and the BHAF. I have a SS one that is turbo mounted which is sort of visible in this old picture.

Mine which is now in the garage attic is the smaller NAPA one. I could most like go through my old posts and find the NAPA number. It fit the area pretty good. I put a short piece in SS 4" Magnaflow exhaust pipe inside the inlet and the turbo intake tube just clamps around the outside of the filters outlet. If anyone is in my area, I will gift it to them. Again at around 325/650 I could not tell any difference except noise.

The stock air filter will flow quite a bit but since the media surface area is considerably smaller you'll just have to change it more often, resulting in more money spent over time. And the stock air box is notorious for cracking and not sealing good enough, allowing dirt in past the filter.

I have BHAF and it is loud in the cab. Wife hates it :) My original box was brittle and cracked in one spot.
Still hoping for a Scotty.

I hated my BHAF on my '98.5. Made the engine sound like it had COPD. I reinstalled the stocker with a paper filter. Lots of intact stock filter boxes offered in the Pay it Forward back then.

Come to think of it, I may still have the stock filter setup from my 2002 3500 ETH/DEE up in the attic of the garage. I removed it and stuck it up there when I put the BHAF on the truck - which was still on it when I sold it.

I've got a wix 2790 installed today even took the silencer ring out of turbo and I can't tell hardly any diffrence in noise need to drill and install the minder and see if it still moves

You should remove the bottom half of the OEM box. Then get in the passengers seat and having someone take you for a ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OuterWears also!!!

The bottom of the box is basically non existent I had an extra one so I cut it down just so the filter had a place to sit without the studs poking a hole in the filter I am going to order the heat shield from big haf

Before the filter 3000 rpm boost was 2 psi now its 5 at . Cruising at 880 degrees egt is now 7 up from 4 . Also cruising very little throttle 0 psi now 2 psi . Maybe the stock filter wasn't as new as it looked

Maybe I'm not understanding but none of that seems to make sense. For a BHAF to change the boost like described means the stock filter would have to be almost solid dirt.

To know if a BHAF makes any difference other than noise one would have to dyno back to back or run the 1/4 mile at a strip back to back. Over my almost 55 years of driving I have learned that making noise is not always speed.

The BHAF was alright sort of until I hooked up the 5th wheel and toured the Western States, then I became a pain in the ear!

Check out this website for filtration:

http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html

Half way down the page:
In 60 minutes the AC Filter accumulated 574gms of dirt and passed only 0.4gms. After only 24 minutes the K&N had accumulated 221gms of dirt but passed 7.0gms.

Compared to the AC, the K&N “plugged up” nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt. See the data tables for a complete summary of these comparisons.
