Amsoil ZO#?

RP Synchomax in MTL out of my 5600

DTT, ATS, Suncoast, that is. (Don't exclude Goerend)

I just ordered an ATSG manual to learn this trans.

I was wondering if any members have purchase the small parts rebuilds for the trans? (everything other than the TC, VB, and Billet shafts)

I'm looking at doing this build myself and was wondering what the differences are in the kits they offer.

I know I probably need to contact them myself, but at this point I don't know what in the hell to ask them for.

I am curious about the clutch updates.

By the time I get done with this, I will have saved $2000 (initail core charge included) over buying one outright.

the differnce in price depends on who you are comparing to? the difference in parts is quality and price, most of the time you get what you pay for!!!! to an extent, they mark it up and give you junk!!!!!! :-laf

I See A Lot Of People On These Forums Lately That Want To Do Their Own Transmission. All Trans Shops Have Kits, V/b's, Converters, Servos, Levers, Springs, Bands, Geartrain Components, Etc. The Problem I Have Seen Is When I Sell A Rebuild Kit, I Always Get The Questions, Why Does The Trans You Built Shift Better, Hold More Power, Last Longer, Etc. Or, I Get The What Do I Set This Clearance Up At, Or Where Do I Adjust This To.

The Real Matter Is Suncoast, Ats, Dtt, Goerend, Nadp, Whoever Have Failed, Learned, Failed, Learned Again To The Point Where They Know Where To Put It. Buying A Rebuild Kit Is Only As Good As The Person Installing It. Not To Say Tons Of People Can't Rebuild A 46-47-48 Rh/re, It's Just That We All Have Our Ways Of Doing It Perfectly. If I Sold You A Rebuild Kit I Would Of Course Help With Setup Over The Phone. On The Other Hand, I Have Also Spent Sleepless Nights Trying To Figure Out How To Hold 1400-1500 Ft/lbs Of Torque And Still Make It Shift Right. For Instance I Like Regular Steels On A Non-shifting Clutch And Kolene Steels On A Shifting Clutch. My Opinion Only. Buy A Kit, And Whoever You Buy It From See How Much They Will Help And Give Up Secrets. They All Will Some But Some More Than Others. Plus You'll Probably Get Zilch For Warranty. If I Sound Harsh I Don't Mean To. It's Just That Building Ctd Transmissions Is How I Feed My Family And Think Whoever Spends Day After Day Doing It Should Get Paid For It While Still Being Able To Help Out The Do-it-yourselfer. It's A Fine Line. Ask Before You Buy A Kit, Will They Help Or Not.

DHawk... . I agree totally with you... I pay the people who master their craft.

On the other hand, I don't have the $5K for the trans that I want. I can invest the $2K in parts that should be necessary for me and my 500hp goal and learn how to make it do what I want.

I also don't have the ability to return a trans to a "factory" to have it fixed when it comes to me and doesn't function. The nearest dealer to my knowledge is DTT, 117 miles away. I'm not hauling my truck 117 miles to have it fixed. That's just me.

I started Diesel Tech this semester. . By the time I get around to this, I should have the ability to do it correctly (if not already) and I already have the facility available.

I'm still in research mode. Nothing vital is at stake at this point.

Keep'em coming.

Kyle,

I bought and installed a "heavy duty" (whatever that means) kit that I bought from TST about 135K miles ago. I know how to use feeler gauges, dial indicators, torque wrenchs, etc. I was very careful and used my service manual. My VB and TC are DTT. The trans is still working fine. You can do the job. Better if a professional (if you can find a good one) does it of course. I did it myself after a "professional" tried to rip me off.

Well said DHawk. I have been building trans for living since '74. Have tried since to be better than most and to seek daily to find ways to do it even better.

Out of all the companies to call and get advise... . Call Dave Goerend.

He will tell you the mistakes he made. He may suggest that you do a valve body swap, but I doubt he'll have a problem selling you the nessissary parts to do the rebuild, as well as direction if you have a problem.

He also had input on the making of that ATSG manual you are reading.

My advise, be very very careful and make sure you have all the spacers and bearings in their proper locations.

You'll need a long throw Shop press and a special tool to do the OD section.

Really it's a very simple transmission. The front 2/3's is an old 727.

Good luck,

Josh
