I went to napa a got the big one ( air filter) and I put it on ,took about 10 min. The next day I hook up the 5th wheel and the walleye boat behind the 5th wheel (65 feet in all)and took off to westeren Kansas, come up to some big Hills and the egt never got over 900 I have pulled 12 to 13 before the big air filter and had to back off to get the egt to drop. the truck ran real good and the spool up on the turbo is great. Man what a filter. . And the price was only $38. 00 to. The part # from napa is 2790. Don't leave home with out one.

I saw that filter in Tool Man Tims truck today at the meet, pretty BIG filter, He said he had similar results with his.

The only thang wrong with the filter that i can see is you need to have a spong cover over it to stop the dirt . I will go and get some tomorrow and make one that will fit and the filter will be great.

I don't think the sponge cover is necessary, and in fact it will probably hurt performance. It will create an unecessary restriction especially if it becomes even a little dirty.

Foam Cover

I ran one of those filters on my old set-up for 2 1/2 years without anything around it and it worked just fine.

The pre-filter question has come up a couple times. I'm using this filter too and was wondering about using a pre-filter. Just looking at it, it looks like similar material to the stock filter, which uses a pre-filter. I've got 2 stock filters and was thinking of pulling the blue pre-filter off those and wrapping it around "The Monster". I don't really want to do this if it's unnecessary.

Perhaps we can get some more input from those who have this filter? I'll be doing oil analysis to check for dirt getting through, but I won't have results for several months.

Anyone else feel strongly about this one way or another?

I've never had my truck's oil analyzed in the past, however I intend to do a couple for the reasons listed above. Luckely I changed the oil at the same time I installed the big filter.

I drive on dusty gravel roads a lot. My guess is that I'd see more benefit from a box to seal the filter from the underhood air than from a prefilter. My thinking is that the front tires are kicking up dust that has to be filtered out. If I were drawing air from the existing cowling duct opening, as well as the factory opening in the fender, I'd have both cooler and cleaner air.

Be interesting to see a few oil analysis to see just how good this new approach is. It'll likely also be a couple or three months before I have the miles for a test .

As a PS, and I know this dosen't sound right on first glance, but I belive it is. Our air filters will do a better job after they have been run a while, as they gain some seasoning, the larger filter passages clog up first, causing the smaller filter openings to flower a greater percentage of the filtered air, filtering out even smaller particles. In other words, doing a better job of keeping out the dirt.

That's one of the main reasons to use a good filter-minder to judge when it's time to change the filter as opposed to just looking at it.

Big as#@$#@ air filter

I thought about putting it in a box but I thougth it would hurt the performance of the filter. I'm going to make a cradle out of valley tin and see what that will do. I need to put spacers on the tin to make sure the air flows around the filter. I'm going to put the thin foam around the filter the kind that is in my ac system on the 5th wheel It is thin and does a good gob on that ,only time will tell.

NAPA 2790 air filter

wouldn't a K&N RE 0880 do about the same thing as the NAPA 2790. What do you guys think. I need to buy one or the other.

Good question. They both filter air with less restriction than the stocker. However the big question is how well do they each filter and with how much restriction.

If you do a search, limited to say the last 30 days, you'll find tons of discussion on the merits of each.

The Napa 2790 (and equivilants) is the largest filter I could fit on my truck without major modifications. It works great for my needs. You might do a search and see what others think.

Good luck,

Ronnie

I put my 2790 on this afternoon. All I can say is wow! I have 370's and a #11 with the stock turbo. I pulled off the K&N with the Pyschotty housing by the way. Anyway, my EGT's dropped a good 200 degrees running emtpy up a hill on my daily route. Overall response is definetly different. Thanks Morparguy.

One benefit of the Moparguy Monster Filter is that every time you open the hood you can't help but laugh when you look at this HUGE thing. Besides being functional, it's just darn fun to look at.

NAPA 2790 air filter

Does anyone have a photo of this monster filter, in place, they can post? I can't imagine how it looks on the truck. thanks.

I,ve had mine for 3 yrs now and found there's no need for a pre filter. I,ve been in driving rain and snow, dust, gravel, slush and everything else you can think of and the filter has never gotten wet or damaged by anything. Just be careful not to poke a screwdriver or something in it when you're under the hood! I,ve tried to find a collar like the one I made (so anyone could adapt it) to stick on the AF942M but no luck. It's even less restrictive than the one you guys are using! Craig

I went the AF942 (Fleetguard) route. This filter just has a 6 inch opening, no flange like the NAPA. I used the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket (cut with about 1/2 inch of the side of the bucket) and a couple of 90 degree PVC elbows to come of the turbo. Works well and the temps are down a bit. Hard to say how much, but worth the effort.
