I got one too a little over a year ago in Dallas. My son was driving my '83 Suburban 4x4 6. 2L diesel which has always smoked if you floor it and wind it up some. My letter said the same thing. The engine in my Suburban is an '85 with a little over 100k miles on it. (My truck was stolen & they trashed the original engine at 150k miles).

I ignored the letter. What else can you do. Some people - no, make that most - don't know the difference between an oil burning gasser and a diesel, especially an older model without electronics.

California has had that same BS for years. I owned an '83 Mitusbishi Turbo Diesel Pickup about 12 years ago and got three of the letters claiming excessive smoke. The first one I replied to claiming a Diesel is suppose to smoke under load. They responded with another form letter stating that even Diesels need to be checked for proper operation. After that I just threw the letters away. Nothing ever happened. That old Mits didn't smoke any more than Mercedes Diesels. If I recall there were billboards around at the time giving an "800" number to call to report "gross polluters". I owned the truck for a few more years after that and never heard another thing about it. Probably because the "Citizens" lost the "800" number.
