Okay guys its time for me to do some fluid changes... . Here are my plans. .

transmission - fluid and filter and adding a new DD mag Hiteck pan. I plan on using ATF3. How many qts should I expect to get?? and how many do I put back in (I read 22 with the new pan??) My DTT TC has a drain plug and i plan on using it, whats the tq on that plug??

Front Diff - Plan on running 80W-90 gear oil, any reccomendation on brand?? and how much does it take?? ( I read 3 qts??)

Rear Diff - Still don't know what fluid to use or how much... I know I will need friction mod depending on which fluid. I don't tow much so I think I will stick with non-syn. Any reccomendations??

Transfer Case - this is still the big mystery in my fluid change plans, heck I don't even know how to get the fluid out... or what to put back in??

Thanks in advance... .

I'll answer the t-case question, on the back of the case, there's 2 plugs, one directly above the other. Remove the lower plug to drain the fluid, and fill to within 1/4" of the top hole with ATF+4, of your chosing.

I'm not even about to start to mention brand names. :D

Word to the wise!

Always make sure you can loosen the fill plug BEFORE you loosen the drain plug!!

Don't ask how I came up with this idea!

Rear Diff

JR2: since you live in Alaska [I'm envious] I would recommend using synthetic differential fluids. This lubricant needs to be fliud at real low temps, and this is what synthetic lubs are all about.

If you don't tow heavy or very often I'd recommend the lighter 75-90w diff fluids.

Check with Bill K at DTT for the torque spec on the TC drain plug, and he can help with the amount of fluid needed for the trans as well.

Hope this helps. Greg L

fluids

I just changed all my drive train fluids as well with 33,000 miles.

I put in Mobil 1 75w-90 in both diffs. Mag hytec out back took 8 qts. Front took 3. 6 ish quarts. Even with this synthetic stuff it still took one bottle of friction modifier to keep the anti-spin happy in the back.

Put mobil 1 syn. trans in the transfer and installed a fast cooler, took 4 quarts. You will need a 10mm hex for drain and fill, this can get really messy if its a 4-wheel drive with the wonderful skid plate in the way of an easy drain, you will need lots of towels:) experiance sucks some times... .

Automatic trans... . good luck...

Manual Transmission I put the stock oil in with fast coolers installed and fit I believe 5 qts. You will need a 17 mm hex for the fill plug. I got one at the local parts house, its actually a oil drain plug size on some foreign cars like BMW, so I got that, couldnt find a regular one.

good luck.

John,

I probably have all the Amsoil fluids you need.

You can use them and then we can get an order together, as I need to get some engine oil for next change.

I have the 75-90 2000, ATF4,

Bob

Hey Bob I might just take you up on that for the Diffs and Xfer case.

I think I might run reqular ATF in the transmission because I want to have some more work done on it in a couple of months... . that is if I can talk our local TDR DTT transmission expert into letting me watch him do it, and buy his beer. :D

I am hoping to do all the diffs-transmission-xfer on Friday so I may try to catch up with you on Thurs. If not then I may just pick up the stuff on Sat and do it Monday. I also have to swap the antifreeze out and install the hoses... oh they are sweet, wait till you see em, that is assuming the rest of them arrive by then. I will give you a call on Thurs if I decide to come get the fluids...

FLUID CHANGE

JR2 I JUST CHANGED MY DIFF/TRANS/COOLANT FLUIDS START

FROM THE BACK I USED AMSOIL 75W-140W I TOOK SOMEBODYS

ELSES ADVICE DRAINED THE FLUID THEN JACKED UP ONE SIDE

OF THE AXLE FOR 4 MIN. THEN THE OTHER SIDE SAME TO DRAIN ALLTHE FLUID OUT. CLEANED ALL THE RTV OFF CLEANED MAGNET

WIPE IT ALL OUT. USED BLCK PERMATEX RTV 1/8" BEED SNUG

BOLT DOWN NOT TIGHT WAIT 1 HR THEN TORQ TO13FTlb or

420 INlb FILL TOBOTTOM OF PLUG THEN JACK UP AXLES AGAIN

THEN FILL AGAIN IT TOOK MORE FLUID AFTER THAT. TORQ FILL

PLUG TO 25FTlb or 300FTlb. NO LEAKS.

TRANMISSION : I CALLED A LOT OF TRANS SHOPS NO HELP. CALLED JIFFY LUBE THEY DO A TRANS FLUSH AND YOU COULD BRING YOUR OWN FLUID $69. 00 BUT DO NOT CHANGE FILTERS

WENT TO PEP-BOYS WITH THERE FLUID ATF+3 (WRONG)$229.

SO I WENT TO DTR MAG AND GOT SOME TRANS NUMBERS. THEY

ALL SUGG. LOOSENING TRANS COOLER LINE. WHAT I DID WAS

GOT A IVERTED FLARE 1/2" MALE TO FEMALE FITTING DICONEC.

THE AFT RETURN LINE ITS THE AFT ONE CONNECT. THE FITTING TO

LINE AND SHORT HOSE TO BUCKET. AFTER I CHANGED THE FILTER

YOU NEED A TORX T-25 FOR FILTER 35INlb DEALER $15. 95 FILTER

GASKET $12. 95 (EXCELENT GASKET). MAINT MANUAL SAYS 4 QTS

FOR FILTER AND ORIGENAL PAN CHANGE BUT I MEASURED OLD

FLUID AND I GOT 6QTS. OK AFTER THAT ADD 6 OR WHAT EVER

THEN START THEN ENGINE AND RUN FOR 15-20 SECONDS AND

MEASURE WHAT YOU GOT OUT. ADD THAT AMOUNT AND DO IT

AGAIN THEY SAID YOU CAN TELL THE DIFF BETWEEN THE OLD

AND THE NEW FLUID BUT I COULD NOT AFTER GOING THROUGH

15QTS I QUIT. I TEST DROVE AND ALL WORKS OK.

ON THE COOLANT I USED HAVOLIN EXT LIFE LIKE THE ARTICLE

IN TDR MAGACINE #35 PEP-BOYS IS THE ONLY PLACED I FOUND IT

HIT THE BOTTLE WITH A 2X4 LIGHTLY FROM THE BOTTOM IT WILL

POP OFF MAKES IT EASEYER. I KNOW ITS A LONG POST MAYBE

IT WILL HELP IF NOT EGNORE IT.

Thanks for the info, no matter how many threads I read on this subject almost every one has an extra little tidbit that I did not know. My list of things I need is growning.

I am also going to be checking the bands on the transmission while I have the pan off... anyone have any hints?? I have a service manual and it should help, but any thing anyone can add will help.

Thanks

BAND ADJUSTMENT

hey jr2 let me apologize for the bad spelling on the last post

wife was chewing on my ear to hurry up and the the new spell

check would not work so i send it anyway before i screw it up and loose the post. On the band adjustment (I'm no trans man ok)

but what i did on the mtc manual 21-710 the rear band fig. 10

loosen the lock nut 9/16 i think 5-6 turns so the adjusting screw

is turnable turn it in so it is just tight then take a inch lb torqwrench and tighten it to 72in lb then back off 3 turns like the

book says. then hold the adj. screw and tighten the look nut

25ft lb or 25x12=in lb. now jr2 if you don't have an inch lb torq

wrench e- mail me and ill mail you one on loan. you can get the

info on member search. on the front band i waited and did

nothing yet. if you look at fig. 65 in the book its outside the

trans on the left side by some linkage you'll see it but i need to

grow some bigger you know what before i attempted that but

i only have 25000 miles on my truck so evaluate yours before

you get in trouble ok. good luck
