Big filter

Got my BHAF in today and had the same reaction as others have had when I looked at it, WOW IS THIS A BIG AIR FILTER:D got home and installed it , easy. Now I hope to get some of the benifits others are getting, lower egt's, less smoke on take off and maybe more turbo noise:D . Has anybody come up with a good heat shield yet, as it does appear to be a little close to the turbo.

Thanks MOPARGUY,

Paul

After running a few days, here is what I noticed, lowered my egt's by 100-150 degrees, truck seems a little more responsive from the seat of the pants and the reaction from the wife and kids was well worth it, boys, holy smokes, wife oh MY gosh.

i have joined the crowd , will be installing a BHAF (napa unit) tonite , we'll see what it does , i presently have the RE-0880 , i'm going to wash it tomorrow and re-oil .

saturday morning i will be on the dyno and i will compare the "moparguy" filter to the K+N . in april i saw a 10 hp difference between a stock airbox with factory stock filter that had 6000 miles on it and the K+N .

perfect, a dyno test between the 0880 and the bhaf.

be looking forward to the results

by next spring

I ordered a Fleetguard BHAF from the local Cummins shop. My winter goal is to develop a box to house this bugger and get air from the stock fender well hole or the firewall (ala psychotty) or another source. I will probably use a turbo and downpipe exhaust blanket, too.

the dust has settled ....

the results are in , and the winner is ????

really neither was a clear winner , the uncorrected numbers gave the K+N RE-0880 the edge by 3hp but that could be operator induced , though me and my truck was pretty consistent .

when the dust settled and the printout of the runs came out with whatever correction the program does , there was only a . 6hp difference between the two filters , K+N on top .

but i did become the newest member of the 400HP CLUB ... 412hp , the corrected number was 409. 9 hp . now to just get the EGT 'S down .

what i do notice egt wise is it runs a tad cooler going down the road , but the outside temps have dropped some . my WOT everything on BROIL still sees my EGT gauge on the stop by 60 mph from a dead stop .

all in all i'm happy with the filter for the cost . it also has quieted down my turbo whine a bit , not sure if that is good or bad , as soon as i put on the K+N at idle you could hear it sucking air , where the BHAF was quiet ?????? the turbo whine reduction is a plus with the better half ...

mopar muscle

thanks for posting dyno results. not enough difference to worry about for hp. too bad its not 100 degrees for a comparison of bhaf and 0880 pulling on a hill so you can get egt comparison.

I just came back from pulling an enclosed trailer with car from eastern PA. to Mackinaw city MI. and back again. Just before I left I removed my airbox with a K&N and installed the BHAF. Pulling the mountains on Rt. 80 in PA. at 70-75 mph. I never got over 1100-1150 deg. egt. I believe the filter does help.

Also for "just incase", I thru thr airbox with K&N [as removed from truck, not cleaned] in the trailer. When I got back home there was oil dripping out of it.

My opinion is it is a lot better than the oily, full of little holes, K&N.

I stopped at a car show in Mi. and there was an Amsoil salesman that claimed their filter will still flow more air than the BHAF?

paul , now seriously , do you think that amsoil guy would tell you something he does not sell is better ???? maybe it does .

i know that the BHAF and the RE-0880 flow more than the factory filter in the stock box , a couple guys tried the BHAF also on the dyno , one had a stock and saw a gain , the other had a stock box and a k=n and says he saw no hp difference ??

My quest has to do with spoolup and low end smoke. A few have reported this helped a lot. So Mopar-Muscle you dyno'd both and saw no real HP difference. What about spoolup, does the boost come up faster with one versus the other?

I hope I'm not duplicating someone else's post, but Hastings makes a filter equivalent to the Napa 2790 and the Fleetguard AH19037. It is the Hastings AF1012. I just ordered one from the Amsoil dealer website. The dealer cost was $43. 90. See your Amsoil dealer to order this filter.

Anybody thought about that thing sucking dirt out of the Hood pad, and scrounging up the top side?

Also, is it clear that a heat shield IS or IS NOT needed?

Have they come loose at the hose connection without the use of a piece of PVC pipe?

I make 40lbs of boost and no pipe ring inside the filter and it hasnt come loose.

Also no sign of dirt from hood pad but it was cleaned only 75,000 miles ago.

A heat shield would be a plus for sure but the improvement on low end smoke is good with out it and EGTs have been more managable also, a heat shield would prolly make it even better.

Restraining the BHAF

After running the BHAF in my truck for several weeks I noticed that the metal cage on the outside of the filter was wearing away the aluminum AC line that is below the filter. I assume that every time I accelerate or shift gears, the Cummins torques over in the engine mounts and pulls on the filter. The fix was to come up with some way to restrain the filter and keep it off the AC line. Here is what worked for me.

A 17", 1/8" x ¾" aluminum strap bought at Home Depot, and bent into a flat bottom "\__/" shape. The bottom is 7" long with two 5" uprights. Two holes were drilled to mount the strap on the studs closest to the firewall. With a nut below the strap and one on top the filter is lifted about ¾" and will not touch the AC line. I also slipped some short pieces of ¾" hose over the uprights to prevent the filter from making contact with the metal strap. By adjusting the angle of the uprights the filter is held firmly clamped in when the hood is closed.

15w40, That's a good idea. For now, since I left the mounting bolts in the fender, I put a shock aborber top rubber grommet on the bolts before laying the filter in. That keeps the filter off the AC line and stops the bolts from rubbing on the fender mesh. Then I strapped the filter down to stop the vibration and movement. I made a heat shield out of flashing aluminum and mounted it using the ring clamp that holds the hose on the filter.

It was good to see the dyno numbers above. I really like the BHAF.

Cleaned mine....

I took a 4" rubber pipe cap (The type for ABS) and made a small hole in the top. Place it over the opening and hit it with the air compressor. Blew out most of the dust I have been driving through on some of my jobs. Didn't have to worry about blowing the element apart with too much air directed at just the paper that way. Might make a thin foam prefilter to wrap around it to catch some of the dirt first. Try and make it last.

BHAF

I hate to ask this but will BHAF have any affect on warranty?

But aside from that I really like it based on what i can see

here. My congrats. to MOPARGUY

Doc Nielsen, I'm not sure but if you look in the warranty book that came with your truck it states that anything that you do to effect the emissions of the truck will viod the warranty. I live in Indiana and my county doesn't have emissions testing and the ajioning counties anything with 11,000lbs plates is exempt. So most of the dealers around here are pretty lax on that stuff but I noticed you lived in California and I would say they would most likely void your warranty. But you could easlly put the stock airbox back on if you have to go back to the dealer.

Heads up on AC line

Read on one of the other BHAF threads this week of wear on the ac lines at the firewall due to the BHAF riding on them. Well, while changing turbo housings yesterday, I noticed the same thing. No damage yet, but with over 3k miles of contact they were bright from the contact. I will be protecting the lines, likely with a bit of sheet rubber I've got in the shop that will seperate the filter from the lines.

Moparguy,

Thanks for the inovation on the BHAF. I put a piece of half inch heater hose around the A/C line. Just sip tie it on there kinda loose. That way it won't freeze up. At least that is what the a/c tech told me..... Thanks again

the bhaf would effect emmisions, but in a good way. more air=less smoke.

as far as dc is concerned, if filtration is as good as stock, it should be good enough.
