REDKEY, IN
David Dunbar, a founding partner of the Diesel Hot Rod Association, has returned to the organization as Competition Director with plans to take an expanded role next season, the DHRA announced today.
Dunbar, 43, is expected to become Vice President of Racing Operations on January 1, 2007, DHRA official Eric McBride said.
McBride will continue in a business development role, with Dunbar overseeing – among other issues – rulebook matters and competition decisions.
“We’re proud to introduce David Dunbar as Director of Competition,” McBride said today. “What the future holds is him taking over on January 1. He’ll be learning the ropes with the idea that he will take the reins at the beginning of the year.
“It’s a huge move. We do believe in Dave. He’s very even and fair-minded. ”
Dunbar, from Gillsville, Ga. , has been involved with the DHRA since its inception, serving as the Division II Director in 2003, the DHRA’s first official season. He spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons close to the organization in an unofficial capacity because of business-related reasons.
Dunbar is the owner of Diesel Performance Motorsports, and is well-known to DHRA competitors for running the dyno at many sanctioned events.
“I think it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Dunbar said. “I know it’s going to be a lot of work, but when it’s something you believe in, the work can be fun. I think everybody needs a real good understanding of what the mission of DHRA is.
“There’s a mission statement and it’s a pretty darned good one. I just think a lot of people need to sit down and read the mission statement. ”
Dunbar said among his crucial roles will be increasing quality communication between the DHRA office and its competitors.
“I think what we’re going to do is hopefully, express to the racers, that they have an ear here,” Dunbar said. “I’m going to make it more known that we want to hear from these guys. There are some fundamental things I want to do.
“We want them to know they have our ear, and that we’re listening. We want them to understand when we can’t accommodate them, why. You can’t make everybody happy, but you can listen and you can communicate why things are the way they are.
“That’s the very fundamental thing we need to express better as a company. ”
Dunbar is married (Penny), with one daughter, Morgan (four). He has been the owner/operator of Diesel Performance Motorsports for the past four years. He spent the previous 17 years with NEC Corporation, where he left in 2002 as Southeastern Area Manager.
