The 47RE trans in a friend's 2000 2500 4x4 is about used up (@ 70k miles). Hunting for lockup on the TC, slipping when cold, etc.

He is asking me who has the most value per $ on a replacement trans for a stock motor, doing seasonal (1000 mi/year) towing of a 15k camper and a 2-place trailer for snowmobiles.

Does anyone have suggestions as to a good supplier (there seems to be hundreds)?

While there are many transmission suppliers, there are only a few that deal specifically with diesel trucks and there concerns. i would stay with ATS, Sun coast or Goren's (sorry) . I bought a complete set-up (stage V) from ATS several years ago and have been nothing but impressed with it, and I'm hard to please. The key is to go with a complete system, yes they cost alot, but thats just the way it goes. I don't think to many are pl;eased when they piece mill the problem, trying to save money usually. Don't for get to get a cooler so the new transmission say that way.

if hes cheap an updated stock rebuild w/a good TQ willdo. but really the previous post from y-knot is accurate.

Thanks for the candid advise. :)

He's taking the truck to his dealer for an "evaluation" to see what they diagnose as being the problem. I told him that perhaps it could be a TPS issue not the whole transmission. (hoping... )

I told him that if he does have to replace the transmission, to do a complete package and be prepared to spend $4-6k on it. Is that accurate?

As was mentioned before, there are several good diesel specialists for transmission. Tell your friend to simply talk to as many of the transmission builders/suppliers as is reasonable and go with whoever he is most comfortable with. It is money well spent. $4-6K is a good ballpark number to count on spending. You can save some doing the installation yourself if you've got the time and tools.

Here's my . 02

Location, Location, Location.

Having a transmission shipped to you or driving 700 miles to get one to save a few hundred bucks will cost you boatloads when you have to be trailered in or have to pay to ship a transmission.

Don't Skimp.

If I had a nickel for every time I saw someone not replace electronics, only to have a solenoid crap out 2 weeks later, or skimp on a billet shaft only to send the stocker through the new TC and pump, ruining any warranty, I'd be rich.

Do it once and do it right.

My boss just put a Georend Bros. transmission and triple disk TC in his 12v and is very happy with it. I checked out their website and was very impressed with all the imformation they give you on it. A lot of guys on here seem to like them.
