Big Rig speed limit 68MPH? NHTSA wants it.

I lived in California until last November, and have towed all over CA. The truck and RV speed limit is 55 mph. Few obey it, but my experience is that the majority of big trucks travel at near 62 mph. I tow at 62 mph and usually fall into line with the trucks. I use 62 mph as I can then tow in O/D with my diesel torque in a sweet spot. I spend my time in the right hand lane on a four lane road, but when in a city with three lanes each way I often use the middle lane if there is significant on and off traffic in the right lane.

In an earlier posting on this topic, a fella absolutely said the best way to fix these wild and unlawful truckers is to dial the 1-800# on the trailer.



Now, I spend an alful lot of time on the freeway. Mostly my own auto or a rental. So I tired this, when the driver merited it.

You could tell the person on the other end, most times, thought I was looney, but they went on with the procedure. Funny thing, there was one driver who had been annoyingly in the left lane for 50 miles traffic passing him on the right. Before I got off the phone, he was in the right lane, and had slowed to near the speed limit. It was a Purdue Chicken truck. Not sure whether a coincidence, or electronic text from Purdue HQ. Maybe someone knows about the Company.

I have to say, it is usually a laborious process to call the 1-800# and get transferred finally to traffic division.

Again, on the 1-800#, I'd like some feedback.

The truckers on I-95, thru the entire state of NC can take 20-30-40 miles to pass... I drive it twice a week. Speed limiters without fixing the problem would only make it worse. The problem is that some trucker are more selfish than the 4 wheeler who are left land lazy on CC. And I might add, most of these truckers are traveling by themselves, not in a convoy.

Take this for what it's worth, but I have heard driver's talk about getting fired for having more than a couple phone calls... and there again, most either have no 800# or it has been painted over to prevent you from calling.



And the "reprimand" is also dependant on the company... the company owned by a former truck driver is probably going to blow more calls off than a company with an actual H&S department.

When getting behind the steering wheel of a vehicle a character change takes place. Drivers become "the Captain of the ship" with an aggressive attitude. They drive their way and if you don't, you don't know how to drive so get the hell out of the way. Drugs Alcohol and impatience have no place on the highway. People under the influence think they can drive when they should not be. We all know the story about the man hauled in front of a Judge and ask why he was driving under the influence. His answer "your honor I had to drive I was too drunk to walk" MAAD has been hard at work and there are fewer drunks on the road than years ago but still far too many. Here there was a horrendous wreck in town on a city street. One of the vehicles was going 100 MPH (according to Police report). Obviously we have insanity in the cities as well as on the road. One reason I travel in my RAM, I hope it would protect my wife and I better than a smaller vehicle. I don't worry about the 18 wheelers. The drivers are monitored by on-board computers. Speed, hard braking and how long stopped. I don't know if they call it a Black box but imagine that is where the idea came from.
