Well I finally swaded the misses into a Big Screen TV... I thought that was the hard part... Picking which one has become mind boggling. . I know I want HD and about 53 inches ... With so many models and so many opinions... I figure who better to ask then my TDR friends. I hear the Mitsubishi, Toshiba, and Hitachi are some of the better models... does anyone have a wide screen one?. . TIA... JB

Of the HD screens I have seen, Panasonic and Pioneer have made some of the best ones that are affordable. Of course if you want the best go with Runco. $$$$$ I have really been impressed with the flat panel plasma displays. The picture is a lot clearer than on a tube or rear projection. These are also pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Mine is Magnavox,54 inch. Not the hd but have had no trouble. Got it at Sears,no interest for a year. That helped the price alot if you know what I mean.

OK... here's a topic I know about!! My doctor and other professional buddies own Mistubishi televisions... why? because Consumer Reports told them it was best! No, they cant think for themselves!. . LOL... anyway, after lots of homework, I discovered that what makes the Mitsu TV so good are its guns... made by Hitachi!!!! Panasonic and Sony, both fine TVs use Hitachi guns... . in the end, I bought a 60 inch Hitachi Ultravision. The *Ultravision* part means that it has 'self alignment' motors built in! The television is now over 4 years old, and I havent had problem 1 with it... .

I have a 50" Hitachi Ultravision that is 4 to 5 years old. Great picture and never had a problem. From my investigation at that time, the Hitachi guns were the best on the market. I don't know about now, you know how things change.

I was looking at the Sony trinitron 36" at sears. Sears carries two different models in 36", listen to the sound. There is a HUGE difference.
I currently have a 26" sony trinitron in the bedroom, and I will miss it.
I have a Tosheba(sp?) in the living room, and it's a POS compared to the trinitron.
None of mine are HD, all are over 3 yrs old.
I looked at the Mitsu's, and I still believe the trinitron gives a better pic.

Bought a 53 inch Sony 2 years ago and is the best picture I've seen, had a Mistubishi 46 inch for about 9 years and it was pretty good but love that Sony!! Pete

The first thing you need to ask yourself is:

Do you want a widescreen?

To take advantage of the new HD signals you'll need one. They are about a grand more than the regular TV's. Most HD TV's don't come with a HD decoder. These are another grand at least. Figure on spending at least 5 grand for a decent widescreen that will decode HD.

I was in the TV business for the last 7 years. In my opinion, Mitsubishi and Hitachi were the best projection sets for the money. Sony makes a good set but they are pricey. Be prepared to deal heavily when you get in the store. Everyone around here price-matches. Buy the extended warranty. It will pay for itself.
Good Luck
Todd

Bought a 52" Magnavox in 1992. Bought a 5 yr. extended warranty. Never used the warranty and still have a great picture to this day.

Don't forget to add a Bose Theater system to it. Then you will have the best! Makes a big difference. We sure enjoy ours. In fact it is call our "Theater Room".

I Have been Thinking of Buying the Panasonic 56" with 16/9 Screen ratio. It Runs around $3600, I like the 16/9 ratio for viewing movies on Laserdisc and DVD.
